record

Chapter 24 - Caroline’s StudyThaddeus finally renovated Caroline’s old study.

Not to erase her.

To use it.

For years it remained frozen.

Her books.

Old chair.

Medical paperwork removed but little else changed.

Grayson entered sometimes to look at photographs.

Thaddeus avoided it.

Now they worked together.

“What stays?” Thaddeus asked.

“Mom’s chair.”

“Yes.”

“Books.”

“Yes.”

“The ugly lamp.”

Thaddeus frowned.

“Your mother loved that lamp.”

“It’s ugly.”

“Correct.”

They kept it.

They removed old file cabinets.

No more secret folders.

Important records went into professional storage.

Family keepsakes into labeled boxes.

Grayson chose one shelf for model rockets.

Thaddeus added a desk.

Not Caroline’s shrine.

A shared room.

Then Grayson found an old sticky note inside a book.

Caroline’s handwriting:

ASK THADDEUS. DO NOT LET HIM SAY “LATER.”

Grayson laughed so hard he almost fell over.

“What?”

He handed it over.

Thaddeus stared.

Then laughed too.

“Your mother bullied me.”

“She was right.”

“Unfortunately.”

They framed the note.

Not because it involved Tabitha.

Because it described the lesson Thaddeus needed most.

Ask.

Answer.

Do not postpone every difficult conversation until the crisis disappears.

That evening, Bernice visited from Huntsville.

Her beagle immediately stole one of Grayson’s socks.

“Excellent training,” Thaddeus said.

Bernice smiled.

The four of them ate dinner.

No Tabitha.

Not yet.

But her absence no longer filled every room.

After dinner, Grayson walked upstairs toward the bathroom.

Bernice saw.

Her expression changed.

Thaddeus noticed.

Grayson entered.

Turned on the sink.

Washed paint from his hands.

Then came back.

Simple.

Bernice whispered:

“He went in.”

Thaddeus nodded.

“Don’t make it a moment.”

She smiled.

“You learned.”

“Slowly.”

Later Bernice asked:

“Do you regret not removing the bathroom?”

“Sometimes.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Grayson said not to.”

Bernice nodded.

Choice.

Again.

The next day Thaddeus received one final legal notice.

The forged continuity agreement had been formally voided through final court order.

All associated management authority terminated.

The residential holding company restored to proper governance.

No loose paper.

No open question.

Maya called.

“It’s finished.”

Thaddeus sat in Caroline’s renovated study.

“What is?”

“The document case.”

“Restitution continues, but title and trust corrections are final.”

Thaddeus looked at the framed sticky note.

DO NOT LET HIM SAY “LATER.”

“Thank you.”

Maya laughed.

“You were a nightmare client.”

“I paid.”

“Eventually.”

Then:

“What are you going to do with the old forged agreement?”

“Archive it.”

“Not burn it?”

“No.”

Evidence did not need destruction once it lost power.

He placed the copy in a labeled legal box.

VOID — FRAUDULENT CONTINUITY AGREEMENT

No mystery.

No blue folder.

No hidden key.

Just a document whose meaning was finally accurate.

Then Grayson entered.

“What’s that?”

“Old paperwork.”

“Bad?”

“Used to be.”

“Now?”

“Just evidence.”

Grayson shrugged.

“Can you help with my rocket?”

Thaddeus immediately stood.

No later.

Caroline would have been unbearable about that.

He smiled.

May you like

“Show me.”

They left the papers behind.
