Chapter 1 - The Girl by the Window

Emma was already fighting when Ethan noticed her.

The nine-year-old sat by the window of Flight 417, one row ahead and across the aisle from him.

A black cloth covered the lower part of her mouth.

Vanessa’s hand held it there.

Emma’s eyes were enormous.

Not sleepy.

Not playful.

Terrified.

Both of her small hands were wrapped around Vanessa’s wrist.

Her shoulders twisted toward the aisle.

Her shoes pushed against the cabin floor.

“Mmm—!”

Ethan pulled out one earbud.

For half a second, his mind tried to turn what he was seeing into something normal.

A mother calming a frightened child.

A napkin.

A sick passenger.

Anything.

Then he saw Vanessa’s face.

Her eyes were narrowed.

Jaw tight.

She glanced quickly toward the aisle.

Then back at Emma.

Emma’s grip began to weaken.

Her fingers slipped.

Her hands slid down Vanessa’s wrist.

Her blinking slowed.

Her head tilted against the seat.

Ethan was standing before he consciously decided to move.

“HEY!”

Nearby passengers turned.

Vanessa’s head snapped toward him.

Ethan crossed the aisle and grabbed her forearm, pulling it away from Emma’s face.

“What are you doing?!”

Vanessa stumbled against the seat.

The black cloth fell into her lap.

For one fraction of a second, panic broke across her face.

Then it disappeared.

She straightened her blouse.

“What is wrong with you?”

Ethan stared.

Emma lay against the window, eyes closed, body limp.

He pointed.

“What did you do to her?”

Vanessa immediately reached toward Emma.

Ethan blocked her.

“Don’t touch her.”

Vanessa’s voice became controlled.

“She’s my daughter.”

Ethan froze.

“Your daughter?”

“Yes.”

Passengers were watching now.

A flight attendant hurried toward them.

“Sir, please step back.”

Ethan did not move far.

Vanessa brushed her hair behind one ear.

“She gets panic attacks when she flies.”

Ethan looked at the cloth.

“What was that?”

“A cooling wipe.”

“Then why was she fighting you?”

Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.

“She wasn’t.”

“I watched her.”

“You saw five seconds.”

“I saw enough.”

The flight attendant knelt beside Emma.

“Sweetheart?”

No response.

A second attendant arrived.

“Is she breathing normally?”

“Yes,” the first said.

“Emma?”

Vanessa reached forward again.

“She just needs to sleep.”

Ethan caught the sentence.

Needs.

Not likes.

Not is.

The flight attendant did too.

“Ma’am, please let us assess her.”

Vanessa’s lips tightened.

“She is my child.”

The attendant remained calm.

“And right now she is an unresponsive passenger.”

A call went through the cabin.

“Is there a medical professional on board?”

Two passengers stood.

A nurse from six rows back reached them first.

Emma’s breathing was clear.

Pulse present.

No obvious injury.

Vanessa continued talking.

“She’s tired. She barely slept last night.”

The nurse looked at her.

“Did she take anything?”

“No.”

“Any medication?”

“No.”

Ethan looked at the black cloth.

Vanessa saw him looking.

She picked it up.

The flight attendant immediately held out her hand.

“I’ll take that.”

Vanessa hesitated.

That hesitation lasted one second too long.

“Why?”

“Because it was against her face before she became unresponsive.”

Vanessa’s composure cracked.

“She was already tired.”

“Ma’am.”

Vanessa surrendered it.

The attendant sealed it inside a plastic service bag without touching it directly.

Ethan watched Vanessa.

She watched the bag.

Not Emma.

That bothered him most.

The nurse spoke softly.

“Emma?”

The girl’s eyelids fluttered.

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Baby?”

Emma’s eyes opened halfway.

She looked at Vanessa.

Fear returned immediately.

Her fingers moved weakly against the armrest.

Ethan saw it.

So did the nurse.

“Emma,” the nurse said. “Can you hear me?”

A tiny nod.

“Do you know where you are?”

Emma whispered something.

The nurse leaned closer.

“What?”

Emma’s lips moved again.

“Plane.”

“Good.”

Vanessa exhaled dramatically.

“See? She’s fine.”

The nurse ignored her.

“Emma, who is this woman?”

Vanessa’s entire body became still.

Emma looked at her.

Then at Ethan.

Her eyes filled.

“She…”

Vanessa leaned in.

“She’s confused.”

The nurse raised one hand.

“Please let her answer.”

Emma swallowed.

“She’s…”

Her voice was barely audible.

Ethan stepped closer.

Vanessa stared at the girl.

For the first time, Ethan saw something colder than panic in her eyes.

Warning.

Emma looked directly at him.

“She’s not my mom.”

Silence.

Vanessa’s face drained.

The flight attendant straightened.

“Ma’am?”

Vanessa immediately laughed.

A small, nervous sound.

“She means I’m not her biological mother.”

Ethan stared.

“You just said she was your daughter.”

“She is.”

Emma shook her head weakly.

“No.”

The nurse touched her shoulder gently.

“Who is she?”

Emma whispered:

“Aunt Vanessa.”

The passengers around them started murmuring.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

The lie had survived less than three minutes.

The flight attendant’s voice changed.

“Ms. Vanessa, I need you to move across the aisle.”

“No.”

“Now.”

Vanessa looked toward Emma.

Then toward the front of the aircraft.

Calculated.

Not confused.

Ethan noticed.

“Don’t let her near the girl.”

Vanessa glared at him.

“You have no idea what you’re interfering with.”

Ethan held her gaze.

“Then explain it.”

Vanessa sat in the opposite aisle seat under the attention of two crew members.

Emma’s hand lifted weakly.

Ethan crouched.

“What is it?”

She pointed toward the backpack under Vanessa’s original seat.

“My bag.”

The flight attendant retrieved it.

Emma pulled it against herself.

Then whispered:

“Don’t let her take me when we land.”

Ethan’s stomach tightened.

“Where are you supposed to go?”

Emma’s eyes filled again.

“Home.”

Vanessa heard.

Her face hardened.

Emma continued:

“She said Mom was hurt.”

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

Emma’s next words were barely louder than the engines.

“But I heard her on the phone.”

“What did you hear?”

Emma’s hand shook.

“She said Mom won’t be my guardian tomorrow.”

Vanessa stood.

“That’s enough.”

The flight attendant blocked her.

“Sit down.”

Emma clutched Ethan’s sleeve.

Then whispered:

“She said once they have me…”

Her voice broke.

“…they get Grandma’s money too.”

And suddenly everyone around them understood the terrifying part.

This was not simply a woman traveling with a child who had lied about their relationship.

Something had been planned for after the plane landed.

And Emma was the only person on board who knew what it was.
