Chapter 16 - Evan’s Warning

The folder contained surveillance photographs.
Lorraine at company properties.
Lorraine meeting Adrian in restaurant parking lots.
Lorraine entering Northstar offices after her official employment had supposedly ended.
Evan had been investigating her too.
One document was a draft memo.
Subject: Adrian Hale / Northstar / Compliance Retaliation
Evan wrote that Lorraine Voss appeared to have participated in suppressing resident complaints and may have been compensated outside ordinary payroll channels.
He also wrote:
Adrian continues to shield Voss despite documented concerns. I do not understand why.
The answer was buried in another folder.
Lorraine was not Adrian’s lover.
Not a secret family member.
Nothing sensational.
Something simpler.
She knew where the money had gone.
Northstar had been Adrian’s laundering mechanism long before Cedar.
Lorraine had managed invoices.
She had signed false service confirmations.
She could destroy him.
Adrian kept paying her because she was both useful and dangerous.
Miranda finally understood the relationship.
Lorraine was not merely Adrian’s employee.
She was his accomplice.
And Adrian had gradually turned an accomplice with experience intimidating vulnerable people into an operative inside Miranda’s home.
The final document on Evan’s laptop was dated eight days before he died.
If I cannot resolve this internally, I will disclose everything to Miranda and the board next week.
He never reached next week.
Miranda stared at the date.
There was no evidence Adrian caused Evan’s death.
Medical records showed a sudden fatal cardiac arrhythmia associated with an undiagnosed condition.
Still, the timing felt cruel.
Adrian had escaped exposure because his brother died.
Then he used that death to hide behind Evan’s credentials.
At the mansion, healing moved slowly.
Bennett entered the dining room for the first time.
He stopped at the threshold.
Miranda knelt beside him.
“We don’t have to.”
Ryan stood behind them.
Bennett pointed toward the table.
“No Lorraine?”
“No Lorraine.”
“Never?”
“Never.”
Bennett looked at Ryan.
Ryan nodded.
“I’m here.”
They took four steps inside.
Bennett saw the chair.
His breathing changed.
Miranda immediately picked him up.
“Okay. We’re done.”
“No.”
She stopped.
Bennett pointed to a different chair.
“Sit there.”
“You want a different chair?”
He nodded.
Miranda moved it.
Bennett climbed onto it.
Ryan sat beside him.
They stayed for two minutes.
No food.
No bowl.
Just sitting.
Dr. Maya later called it progress.
Ryan called it “practice.”
That night Claire came to the house.
“Lorraine wants to talk.”
Miranda looked up.
“To me?”
“No. To prosecutors.”
“Why?”
“She may be exploring cooperation.”
Miranda laughed bitterly.
“Now she remembers the truth?”
“People often become more truthful when evidence narrows their options.”
“What does she want?”
“Her lawyer will negotiate.”
Miranda’s jaw tightened.
“She hit my son.”
“I know.”
“She terrorized Bennett.”
“I know.”
“And now she gets something because she tells them what Adrian did?”
“Possibly.”
Miranda stood.
“That’s disgusting.”
Claire did not argue.
“The system can be ugly. It can also be practical.”
Miranda paced.
“What could she give them that they don’t already have?”
“Direct evidence of Adrian’s intent. Instructions. Financial records. Password theft. The blue envelope.”
Miranda stopped.
“She still has it?”
“We don’t know.”
Lorraine’s attorney claimed she could identify where missing evidence had been placed.
Miranda felt rage.
“Placed?”
Claire nodded.
“Lorraine says she never gave Adrian the envelope.”
“Why?”
“Because after she opened it, she realized Adrian intended to blame her for everything if Cedar was discovered.”
Miranda stared.
“So she kept leverage.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“That’s what she’s offering.”
Miranda looked toward the stone column.
Even criminals needed backups.
The irony was unbearable.
Three days later, under a formal cooperation proffer, Lorraine directed investigators to a rented storage locker.
Inside was the blue envelope.
Along with copied company documents.
A second phone.
Cash.

And a sealed packet labeled:
IF ADRIAN BETRAYS ME.
