Chapter 8 - The Compartment Behind the Column

Miranda stared at the scrap.

The paper matched Evan’s blue stationery.

Ryan crouched beside her.

“Was that Dad’s?”

“I think so.”

“Did Lorraine put it there?”

“I don’t know.”

Miranda called Claire.

Within an hour, Sergeant Mercer was back at the house with an evidence technician.

They photographed the compartment before touching anything.

A partial fingerprint was recovered from the inner panel.

The torn blue paper carried Evan’s handwriting.

Only four characters remained.

4-1-7-

Not enough to identify a complete code.

But enough to prove the missing envelope had likely been opened near the hidden compartment.

Ryan watched from the stairs.

Mercer noticed.

“You’re the one who showed your mom this?”

Ryan nodded.

“You notice a lot.”

Ryan glanced at Miranda.

“That’s what Lorraine said too.”

Mercer’s expression softened.

“Well, noticing things helped today.”

After the police left, Miranda inspected the column from a distance.

The hidden safety switch had been installed only two years before Evan died.

Evan had supervised the renovation.

Had he also created the compartment?

Miranda searched old architectural invoices.

One name appeared on the stonework order.

Daniel Reeve.

A retired craftsman who had worked on the mansion for nearly twenty years.

Claire located him the next morning.

Daniel remembered the compartment.

“Mr. Hale asked for it personally.”

“What did he say it was for?” Miranda asked.

“Backup keys.”

“Did he give you dimensions?”

“Yes.”

“Anything unusual?”

Daniel hesitated.

“He asked if I could build a second cavity.”

Miranda’s heart accelerated.

“Where?”

“He didn’t want it visible from the first.”

Daniel described the mechanism.

The shallow compartment was a decoy.

A second latch opened a deeper cavity inside the column.

Miranda and Claire waited for investigators before touching it.

Mercer returned.

Daniel guided them by video call.

Miranda pressed the inner panel upward, then sideways.

A deeper section clicked open.

Inside was a black metal document box.

Ryan stood at the top of the staircase.

Miranda looked at Mercer.

He nodded.

She lifted it out.

The box required a four-digit combination.

The torn paper showed 4-1-7-.

Three digits.

One missing.

Miranda tried to think like Evan.

Project Cedar.

Their wedding date?

April 17.

No.

Too obvious.

Ryan walked down two steps.

“Mom?”

“Stay there, sweetheart.”

“Dad always used Bennett’s birthday backward for stuff.”

Miranda looked up.

“What?”

“He told me once.”

Bennett was born July 14.

Backward: 4170.

Miranda looked at the box.

4-1-7-0.

The lock clicked.

Inside were paper records sealed in plastic sleeves.

Original authorization forms.

Bank routing documents.

Vendor ownership disclosures.

And a small digital recorder.

Miranda pressed play.

Evan’s voice filled the hall.

“If you’re hearing this, then I was right to make copies.”

Miranda covered her mouth.

Ryan sat down on the stairs.

Evan continued.

“Adrian has been moving money through Cedar vendors. I confronted him this morning. He says he can restore everything before the annual audit. I told him there is nothing to restore that makes theft acceptable.”

Miranda’s eyes filled.

The recording crackled.

“I haven’t told Miranda yet because she already has enough with Bennett being sick this week, and because I’m ashamed I didn’t catch this earlier.”

Miranda started crying silently.

Evan’s voice continued.

“I’m meeting Adrian Friday. If he signs the repayment agreement, I’ll take it to counsel. If he refuses, I go to the board.”

The recording ended.

Claire checked the date.

Friday had been three days before Evan’s death.

There was another file.

Miranda pressed play.

Adrian’s voice came through.

“You think you can destroy me over accounting entries?”

Evan answered.

“You stole from us.”

“From a company our father built for both of us.”

“You stole from employees, shareholders, everyone who trusted us.”

Adrian’s voice became quieter.

“If Miranda finds out, she’ll turn you against me.”

“No, Adrian. You did that yourself.”

A chair scraped.

Then Adrian said something that made Miranda’s skin go cold.

“If I go down, I’m not going alone.”

The recording stopped.

Ryan whispered from the stairs.

“Mom?”

Miranda turned.

He looked terrified.

“Did Uncle Adrian know Dad was recording him?”

Before Miranda could answer, Claire’s phone buzzed.

She read the message.

Then looked at Miranda.

“Adrian just filed an emergency motion with the board.”

“For what?”

“To suspend your executive authority pending a fitness review.”

Miranda stared at the document box.

May you like

Adrian was no longer simply hiding.

He was attacking.
