Chapter 18 - WHAT TYLER SAVEDTyler did not show Gavin immediately.

This time he went to Rachel.
Her number was still inside the back cover of an old workbook.
He called after school from a neighbor’s porch.
“Ms. Alvarez?”
“Tyler?”
“My mom found my notebook.”
Rachel went quiet.
“What notebook?”
He explained.
Everything.
The hand squeezes.
The food.
The board.
The notes.
The missing notebook.
Rachel listened without interrupting.
Then asked:
“Are you safe right now?”
“Yes.”
“Is your grandmother safe right now?”
Tyler looked through his house window.
Monica was in the kitchen.
Beatrice sat nearby.
“I don’t know.”
Rachel’s tone remained calm.
“I need to speak with your father.”
“He doesn’t believe me.”
“I think he’s starting to.”
“How do you know?”
“Because he called me yesterday.”
Tyler froze.
“Dad called you?”
“Yes.”
Hope arrived cautiously.
Rachel told him to save every photo somewhere Monica could not access.
Then she called Gavin.
That evening Gavin sat with Tyler in his bedroom.
“Show me.”
Tyler opened the cloud folder.
Photographs of notebook pages.
Gavin read.
His face changed line by line.
May 14 — Mom said Grandma ruined everything.
May 19 — Grandma said she is afraid of Mom.
May 22 — Mom canceled nurse.
May 26 — Mom threw away food.
June 2 — Mom hid communication board.
Then a short audio file.
Tyler frowned.
“I forgot about that.”
It had recorded accidentally during a school video assignment.
Monica’s voice, distant but clear:
“Stop making everything harder.”
Then Beatrice’s weak sound.
Monica again:
“I gave up everything because of you.”
No threat.
No smoking gun.
But enough.
Gavin closed his eyes.
“Dad?”
He looked at his son.
“I’m sorry.”
Tyler’s face crumpled.
“For what?”
“For making you prove this.”
Tyler cried.
Gavin pulled him close.
“I should have listened.”
“I told you.”
“I know.”
“Grandma told you too.”
Gavin’s throat tightened.
“I know.”
That night he made a decision.
He did not confront Monica again.
Not yet.
Instead he changed his schedule.
Canceled a meeting.
May you like
Told no one.
And the next afternoon, Gavin Rowan came home three hours earlier than his wife expected.
