Chapter 24 - THE FIRST SAFE DINNERThe dinner was chicken soup.

Nothing special.
That made it special.
Beatrice sat at the dining table in her wheelchair.
The same place where months earlier Monica had pushed spoonful after spoonful too quickly.
Now Rachel sat nearby reviewing notes.
Gavin stood at the stove.
Tyler carried the bowl.
“Can I do it?”
Rachel smiled.
“Slowly.”
Tyler sat beside Beatrice.
“Ready?”
Beatrice looked at YES.
Tyler lifted one spoonful.
Waited.
Beatrice swallowed.
He waited again.
No rushing.
No sighing.
No irritation.
He wiped a tiny spot from the corner of her mouth.
“Too hot?”
NO.
“Good?”
YES.
Gavin turned away from the stove.
His eyes filled.
Tyler noticed.
“Dad, are you crying?”
“No.”
“You are.”
“Steam.”
“There’s no steam over there.”
Rachel laughed.
Gavin shook his head.
Beatrice’s eyes crinkled.
Tyler grinned.
“Grandma thinks you’re lying.”
Beatrice selected:
YES.
Everyone laughed.
The sound filled the room.
Not loud.
Not dramatic.
But different.
Safe.
Halfway through the meal Tyler asked:
“More?”
Beatrice chose NO.
“Done?”
YES.
Tyler immediately put the spoon down.
No argument.
No “one more bite.”
No pressure.
Beatrice stared at him.
Then slowly raised her left hand.
Tyler leaned closer.
Her palm touched his cheek.
It trembled there.
Tyler’s eyes filled.
“You okay?”
Beatrice selected:
LOVE.
Then:
YOU.
Tyler began crying.
“Love you too, Grandma.”
He hugged her carefully.
Gavin watched.
Months earlier Tyler had wrapped his arms around Beatrice because he was trying to protect her from his mother.
May you like
Now he hugged her because there was nothing to protect her from.
For the first time, the same room held a completely different memory.
