Chapter 11 - The Copy Daniel LostDaniel had not lost the third copy accidentally.

He destroyed it.
Arthur stared at him.
“You what?”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“My father found out Grace gave it to me.”
“And?”
“He threatened my wife.”
Arthur laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
Daniel accepted it.
“He had private information about her medical history. He threatened to expose it during a custody fight with her ex.”
Arthur stood.
“So you burned evidence.”
“Yes.”
“Evidence that could have protected Grace.”
“Yes.”
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“I was a coward.”
The honesty did not repair anything.
But Arthur was learning not to confuse explanation with absolution.
“What was on it?”
“A recording.”
“Of?”
“My father and Dean discussing the trust manipulation.”
Arthur’s jaw tightened.
“Anything about Grace?”
“Yes.”
Silence.
“What?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Dean said Grace would never stop.”
“And Pierce?”
“My father said, ‘Then make the problem expensive enough that she does.’”
Not murder.
Pressure.
Still important.
“What else?”
“Dean mentioned Vanessa.”
Arthur waited.
“He said she could get close to Grace.”
So Vanessa had been used before Arthur.
Not merely after Grace died.
She was planted first as a consultant.
Then later as Arthur’s wife.
A long game.
Morales asked:
“Could the recording exist elsewhere?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Grace made copies obsessively.
Maybe.
Then Emma spoke from the doorway.
Everyone turned.
Arthur hadn’t realized she was listening.
“You keep saying Mom copied everything.”
Arthur immediately moved toward her.
“You should be resting.”
“I’m fine.”
“Emma—”
She held up one hand.
“Dad.”
He stopped.
“What?”
“The silver drive.”
Arthur’s pulse jumped.
The one Emma claimed she hid before Vanessa searched them.
“I didn’t put it in the music box.”
Arthur stared.
“You said—”
“I lied.”
“Where is it?”
“At school.”
She looked guilty.
“I put it in my locker.”
Arthur almost laughed from relief.
Vanessa had nearly killed them over a drive that wasn’t even on the property.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Emma looked at Daniel.
Then Morales.
Then Arthur.
“I didn’t know who was good.”
That sentence silenced everyone.
Arthur crouched in front of her.
“You can trust Detective Morales.”
Emma nodded.
“I know now.”
“And me.”
She hesitated.
Then:
“I’m trying.”
Arthur accepted it.
The drive was recovered from Emma’s school locker under police supervision.
A strip of old tape was attached.
Grace’s handwriting:
ARTHUR — NOT DEAN.
Forensic technicians opened it.
Video.
Grace.
Dean.
Harold Pierce.
Vanessa.
All four inside the boathouse.
Date:
Nine days before Grace died.
Grace stood near the desk.
“You’re all done.”
Dean looked angry.
Pierce looked bored.
Vanessa looked terrified.
Grace held paperwork.
“I copied the trusts. I copied the transfers. I recorded the vendor accounts.”
Pierce said:
“You’re interpreting complex structures as crimes.”
Grace laughed.
“You always sound most expensive when you’re lying.”
Arthur almost smiled through tears.
Then she turned toward Vanessa.
“Tell Arthur.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I can’t.”
“Yes, you can.”
“He’ll hate me.”
“He should know what you did.”
Vanessa cried.
Dean interrupted:
“She doesn’t need moral advice.”
Grace looked at him.
“She needs a lawyer who isn’t Harold.”
Pierce’s face hardened.
Then Dean moved closer.
“Think about Emma and Noah.”
Grace’s expression changed instantly.
“Do not mention my children.”
“If you blow up the company, you blow up their future.”
Grace stepped toward him.
“My children would rather have less money than a criminal uncle.”
Dean laughed.
“I’m not their uncle.”
“No.”
Grace’s voice became cold.
“You’re a man Arthur loves like a brother. That’s why you’ve gotten away with this.”
Arthur shut his eyes.
Then Pierce said:
“What exactly do you want, Grace?”
“To tell Arthur everything.”
Dean:
“He won’t believe you.”
Grace:
“He will when I show him.”
Pierce:
“And if you never get the chance?”
Silence.
Arthur felt cold.
Grace looked directly at him.
“Is that a threat?”
Pierce smiled.
“It’s a hypothetical.”
Then Dean added:
“Roads are dangerous when people are distracted.”
Arthur stopped breathing.
The video ended.
Morales said quietly:
“That changes things.”
Arthur nodded.
Dean had already threatened an accident.
Pierce had joined.
Vanessa witnessed it.
Nine days later Grace died on a road.
Then the forensic technician raised one finger.
“There’s another file.”
Arthur turned.
Not video.
A scanned document.
The third copy Daniel thought he destroyed.
Grace had scanned it first.
Arthur looked at Daniel.
His face collapsed.
Grace had anticipated cowardice too.
The document showed Dean and Pierce had prepared a contingency plan involving Grace’s shares.
And at the bottom—
a handwritten note.
If Grace dies before disclosure, V enters Phase II.
May you like
Arthur stared.
Vanessa’s entry into his life had been planned before Grace died.
