Chapter 6 - The Camera That Went DarkThere were eight security cameras covering the Caldwell estate grounds.

Seven worked normally that afternoon.

The eighth covered the lake.

It went offline at 2:11 p.m.

Vanessa brought Emma and Noah outside at 2:16.

Arthur arrived at approximately 2:31.

The camera returned at 2:47.

Arthur stared at the timeline.

“Convenient.”

Detective Morales nodded.

“Very.”

Head of family security Michael Trent claimed the camera suffered a network failure.

It was believable.

Until forensic technicians checked the system.

Someone had logged into the admin panel manually.

Credentials:

M.TRENT.

Arthur looked at Michael across the mansion security office.

“You disabled it.”

Michael went pale.

“No.”

“The system says you did.”

“My credentials could have been stolen.”

“By who?”

“I don’t know.”

Arthur almost laughed.

Everyone suddenly knew nothing.

Morales asked Michael to sit.

He refused initially.

Then she mentioned the burner phone.

His expression changed.

Tiny.

But visible.

“You know about it,” she said.

“No.”

“Then why did your face change?”

“I’m stressed.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

Same language again.

Stress.

Emotion.

Confusion.

He was learning to hate those words when used as weapons.

Police searched Michael’s work vehicle.

Nothing.

His office.

Nothing.

Then they found a second phone taped beneath a drawer.

Not the burner messaging Vanessa.

Another device.

Messages with Dean.

Lake cam down 2:10–2:45.

Michael:

Too long.

Dean:

Do it.

Arthur stared.

Michael finally confessed.

“I thought Vanessa was going to scare them.”

Arthur took one step forward.

Morales stopped him.

“Scare them how?”

Michael swallowed.

“She said the kids stole something.”

“So you disabled surveillance while an adult took two children to an isolated lake to ‘scare’ them?”

“I didn’t know about the chains.”

Arthur’s voice became deadly calm.

“You expected us to believe that?”

Michael looked down.

Dean paid him $300,000 over three years.

Not for one crime.

For access.

Gate logs.

Travel schedules.

Camera footage.

Grace’s movements.

Arthur’s schedule.

“Were you working for Dean when Grace died?”

Michael said nothing.

Morales leaned forward.

“Answer.”

“Yes.”

Arthur felt the room tilt again.

“What did you do?”

“Deleted driveway footage.”

Arthur stared.

“From the night of the crash?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Dean said it would protect the family.”

“Who was on the footage?”

Michael looked at Arthur.

“Vanessa.”

“And?”

“Dean’s SUV.”

Arthur’s jaw clenched.

Grace had documented Vanessa arriving.

Ethan remembered it.

Now Michael confirmed Dean appeared later.

“You erased evidence.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Grace was going to die?”

“No.”

Arthur believed that part only because Michael looked terrified enough.

But moral innocence ended long before murder.

“What about yesterday?”

Michael admitted Dean told him to delay Arthur.

Arthur frowned.

“How?”

“Your driver.”

Arthur normally used a driver after client lunches.

A fake message told the driver Arthur’s meeting had been extended twenty minutes.

Arthur happened to change plans and drive himself.

That random decision may have saved Emma and Noah.

Arthur felt sick.

“What was supposed to happen during those twenty minutes?”

Michael shook his head.

“I thought Vanessa would get the drive and unlock them.”

“Who was supposed to be nearby?”

Michael looked away.

Arthur’s pulse rose.

“Vanessa said Dean promised someone would be nearby.”

Michael said nothing.

Morales:

“Was it you?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

“I don’t know his name.”

“Describe him.”

Michael swallowed.

“Older guy. Gray hair. Expensive clothes.”

Arthur frowned.

“Where did you meet?”

“Dean’s office.”

“What did Dean call him?”

Michael thought.

“Mr. Pierce.”

Arthur went still.

Ava’s expression changed immediately.

Arthur looked at her.

“No.”

Harold Pierce.

Caldwell Capital’s longtime outside counsel.

Grace’s estate attorney.

The man who handled Arthur’s marriage documents with Vanessa.

The man who had told Arthur after Grace’s death that there was nothing suspicious about her estate.

Ava whispered:

“Harold Pierce?”

Michael nodded.

Arthur felt cold.

Pierce had not merely known Dean.

He had been inside every legal structure Dean needed to manipulate.

Trusts.

Company entities.

Estate papers.

Grace’s financial disclosures.

Maybe the “we” was much larger than Arthur thought.

Morales asked:

“Was Pierce at the lake?”

Michael shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“Then why mention him?”

“Because Dean said if Vanessa failed…”

Michael hesitated.

“…Pierce had another way to make sure Grace’s evidence never reached Arthur.”

Arthur stared.

Grace had been dead three years.

What could Pierce still control?

Ava answered before anyone else.

“The children’s trusts.”

Arthur slowly turned.

Grace had left substantial Caldwell Capital shares to Emma and Noah.

If Pierce controlled the trust paperwork—

May you like

then the attack at the lake might not only have been about destroying evidence.

It might also have been about who inherited millions if both children died.
