Chapter 1 - THE TWO SNIPSThe first sound was the scissors.

The second was Ava screaming.

Mason Kingsley had just stepped through the double doors of his Greenwich mansion when the silver blades closed through his six-year-old daughter’s right ponytail.

Once.

The thick blonde hair resisted.

Clarissa tightened her grip.

Then the scissors closed a second time.

The severed lower half twisted through the air and landed softly on the polished black marble floor.

Ava immediately began crying.

Her left ponytail still hung long beneath its white ribbon.

The right ended abruptly near her shoulder, ragged and uneven.

Ben ran toward his little sister.

“No!”

The nine-year-old placed himself beside her.

Clarissa still held the scissors.

Then she saw Mason.

Her face changed instantly.

The satisfaction disappeared.

Concern replaced it so quickly it looked rehearsed.

She moved the scissors behind her back.

“The kids were playing—”

She pointed at Ben.

“Ben cut her hair!”

Ben stared at her.

For half a second, he seemed too shocked to speak.

Then his face crumpled.

“She’s lying!”

Mason stopped.

Clarissa rushed on.

“I walked in and he had the scissors. Ava was screaming—”

“Dad!”

Ben pointed.

“She did it!”

Ava hid against her brother.

Mason looked toward the wall mirror.

Clarissa had forgotten about the reflection.

Behind her burgundy gown, one silver blade remained visible.

Then Mason saw the floor.

The severed blonde lock lay beside Clarissa’s heel.

The scissors shifted behind her back.

Mason strode forward.

His anger overran his judgment.

He slapped Clarissa once across the cheek with an open hand.

Her face turned sharply.

She lost balance in her heels and stumbled onto the marble.

The scissors slid from behind her back.

They stopped beside Ava’s severed hair.

No one moved.

Mason immediately looked at his own hand.

What he had done registered.

He had hit Clarissa.

Wrong.

Even furious, wrong.

But the thought lasted only a second because Ava was still sobbing.

Mason knelt.

“Ava.”

She backed away at first.

That nearly broke him.

Then she recognized his voice and rushed into him.

“Daddy.”

He held her.

“I’m here.”

Ben remained beside them.

Still protective.

Still staring at Clarissa as though she might stand and do something else.

Mason noticed.

“Ben.”

His son looked at him.

“You’re safe too.”

Ben’s mouth trembled.

Clarissa pushed herself upright.

“Mason, you don’t understand.”

“Do not come closer.”

His voice was no longer loud.

It was worse.

Controlled.

Clarissa froze.

Mason looked at the scissors.

Then at the hair.

Then at Ava’s uneven ponytail.

“Did you cut her hair?”

Clarissa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I told you—”

“Did you?”

“No.”

Ben screamed:

“She did!”

Clarissa pointed.

“You see how aggressive he is?”

Ben stopped.

Something changed in his expression.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Mason saw it.

“You’ve said that before.”

Ben lowered his eyes.

Clarissa spoke quickly.

“Because it’s true. He has been acting out for months.”

Mason looked at his son.

Ben whispered:

“She always says that after she does something.”

Mason’s stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Ben looked toward Clarissa.

She stared back at him.

A warning passed through the silence.

Mason stood.

“Clarissa, go to the guest wing.”

“What?”

“Now.”

“This is my home.”

“Not near the children tonight.”

She stared.

“You just hit me.”

Mason’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

He did not excuse it.

“That was wrong.”

Clarissa seemed surprised.

“But it does not explain why my daughter’s hair is lying on the floor.”

Clarissa opened her mouth.

Mason raised his hand—not threateningly, simply stopping the argument.

“No more.”

He called Marco? No, that's another story. Need unique security. Let's use security chief Declan Rowe. But add new character now.

Mason called the household security office.

“Declan, come to the entrance hall.”

Clarissa’s face changed.

“Mason.”

He ignored her.

Then Ava pulled at his jacket.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Is Ben in trouble?”

Mason looked at his son.

Ben was staring at the severed hair.

“No.”

Ava whispered:

“She wanted him to be.”

Mason froze.

Clarissa did too.

“What?”

Ava wiped tears with both hands.

“She said you would send Ben away after today.”

Mason slowly turned toward his wife.

Clarissa had gone completely pale.

May you like

And suddenly the haircut no longer looked like an act of cruelty committed in anger.

It looked like part of something planned.
