Chapter 5 - THE HAIR ON THE FLOORThe severed ponytail stayed in an evidence bag.

Ava hated that.

“Why can’t I keep it?”

Mason knelt beside her.

“Because it helps prove what happened.”

Ava touched the uneven right side of her hair.

The stylist had trimmed only enough to keep the damaged section from tangling.

Ava refused to cut the left side to match.

“I don’t want her to change both.”

So the left ponytail remained long.

The right visibly shorter.

Uneven.

Not stylish.

Ava wanted it that way.

“It’s what she did.”

Mason understood.

The hair became part of Ava’s control over the story.

Not Clarissa’s.

The police were not initially involved.

Mason’s attorney advised reporting the incident because an adult had used scissors on a child in an intimidating way and then attempted to blame another child.

A detective named Simone Barrett interviewed Mason.

Then Ben and Ava separately through a child-appropriate process.

Ava’s account was simple.

Clarissa told her to sit.

Ava said no.

Clarissa said:

“Stop being dramatic.”

She grabbed the ponytail.

Cut it.

Ava screamed.

Ben ran in.

Then Mason arrived.

No embellishment.

No coaching.

Ben’s account matched.

Clarissa’s did not.

She told police Ben had picked up the scissors while she was arranging flowers.

That failed almost immediately.

No flowers were being arranged in the entrance hall.

The party florist had already finished hours earlier.

Clarissa then said she only took the scissors from Ben.

But Mason had seen her hide them.

The mirror mattered.

A small security camera above the front entrance also captured part of the aftermath.

Not the haircut itself.

The angle showed Clarissa’s back.

Ben beside Ava.

Mason entering.

Then Clarissa moving her right arm behind her body.

Moments later the scissors slid onto the floor when she stumbled.

Ben never touched them.

Still not perfect proof of the cutting.

Enough to destroy Clarissa’s first story.

Then the forensic examination returned.

Clarissa’s fingerprints covered the scissors.

Ben’s did not.

Her attorney argued she handled them because she took them away.

Possible.

But combined with everything else?

Less convincing.

Mason sat with Ava that evening.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Will my hair grow?”

“Yes.”

“All the way?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“A while.”

She frowned.

“Like until Christmas?”

“Maybe longer.”

She became sad.

Mason touched the white ribbon.

“You can wear it any way you want.”

Ava looked toward Ben.

“He says it looks cool.”

Ben appeared at the doorway.

“It does.”

“It looks weird.”

“No.”

Ben walked in.

“It looks like a warrior haircut.”

Ava smiled for the first time.

“Warriors have ponytails?”

“Some do.”

“Which ones?”

Ben had no answer.

“Secret ones.”

Ava laughed.

Mason watched them.

Ben had been protecting her long before any adult understood he needed protection too.

Mason called him over.

“You know you don’t have to be her parent.”

Ben’s face changed.

“I’m not.”

“Sometimes you act like one.”

Ben looked down.

“She needs someone.”

“She has me.”

The sentence felt weak even as Mason said it.

Ben looked up.

“Now.”

Mason’s chest tightened.

“Yeah.”

He nodded.

“Now.”

That night Mason opened every recent message Clarissa had sent about Ben.

Hundreds.

He had never noticed the pattern because each seemed small.

Ben is moody again.

Ben scared Ava tonight.

Ben doesn’t respect boundaries.

Ben asked if Diana would still be alive if you hadn’t remarried. I’m worried about his fixation.

We may need professional help.

Mason had replied:

Handle it.

Again and again.

Two words.

Handle it.

He had unknowingly given Clarissa permission to create the evidence he later received from her.

Then he found a message from eleven days earlier.

Clarissa:

If something undeniable happened to Ava, would you finally consider Ridgebrook?

Mason had not recognized the name then.

He answered:

If Ava is ever actually unsafe, we’ll do whatever is necessary.

He stared at his own words.

May you like

Clarissa did not need to forge his permission.

She had engineered circumstances to trigger it.
