Chapter 16 - THERE WAS ANOTHER MANJulian Mercer was not charming when stripped of secrecy.

He was simply ashamed.

Arielle met him once at Natalie’s request.

Not confrontation.

Fact-checking.

Julian admitted affair with Cambria began emotional May, physical August.

Same pattern as Dorian.

Flattery.

Complaints about fiancée.

Private dinners.

Then sex.

Cambria told Julian:

“Natalie sees you as project.”

Same way she told Dorian Arielle did not need him.

She found insecurity and reflected opposite.

To Dorian:

You deserve to be wanted.

To Julian:

You deserve to be accepted.

Cambria customized fantasy.

Arielle asked:

“Did she ever say she loved you?”

“Yes.”

“Did you say it?”

Julian looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

Unlike Dorian.

Arielle noted.

“Did she ask you to leave Natalie?”

“Yes.”

“Did you promise?”

“I said I’d think.”

Same vague promises.

Men giving enough hope to continue access.

Julian showed messages voluntarily.

One chilled Arielle.

Cambria:

If Dorian’s marriage ends first, everything becomes easier.

Julian:

Why do you care about his marriage?

Cambria:

Long story.

Another:

Arielle always thinks she wins.

Julian:

Do you know her personally?

Cambria:

Enough.

This proved rivalry.

Not just affair.

Then:

Julian:

You’re sleeping with him?

Cambria:

Not anymore.

Date August 20.

So Julian knew Dorian history.

But still continued.

No innocents among cheating adults.

Arielle asked:

“Did Cambria ever mention gala plan?”

Julian hesitated.

“She said she was going to force Arielle to show her real face.”

“What does that mean?”

“I asked.”

“She said everyone thinks Arielle is graceful until someone takes what she wants.”

Arielle’s expression hardened.

Cambria planned provocation.

Then Julian showed message gala afternoon:

Tonight she finally breaks.

There.

Premeditation.

Not necessarily fall specifics.

But intent.

Arielle sent to attorney.

Cambria’s false public implication could now be challenged decisively.

Would Arielle sue?

Maybe defamation.

Maybe not.

She considered emotional cost.

Attorney advised preserved rights.

Arielle chose formal demand for retraction first.

Cambria refused.

Then video surfaced.

Not leaked by Arielle.

Caleb’s licensing agency somehow published still? Maybe no. Better Arielle decides controlled release through legal statement after Cambria refuses retraction. Short clip posted through counsel to correct record.

Public reaction flipped overnight.

Headline:

VIDEO SHOWS CAMBRIA SLOANE APPARENTLY FALLING WITHOUT CONTACT

Dorian’s slap became secondary scandal again.

Cambria’s social standing collapsed.

But Arielle did not celebrate.

Because video also replayed her humiliation everywhere.

Millions could watch husband hit her.

Vindication and re-traumatization together.

She shut phone off.

Dorian sent:

I am sorry the footage is public. I know proof helps and hurts. I won’t contact you again today.

Good.

He learned.

Celeste called.

Arielle did not answer.

Cambria posted no response for forty-eight hours.

Then:

A short clip does not capture emotional abuse preceding it. I acted out of fear.

Arielle stared.

New narrative.

Not pushed physically.

Now fear.

Cambria was retreating one claim at a time.

She did not explicitly admit fake fall.

Attorney advised not engage.

Then Margot Sloane called Arielle.

“Cambria is spiraling.”

“I’m sorry.”

“She needs help.”

“I agree.”

“Would you speak to her?”

“No.”

Margot paused.

“Fair.”

That mattered.

Arielle could care about Cambria’s wellbeing without becoming responsible for stabilizing person who harmed her.

Boundaries.

Then Dorian met Julian alone.

Not fight.

No violence.

They sat in attorney office because both had information.

Dorian asked:

“Did she tell you I loved her?”

“Yes.”

“She told me you were using her.”

Julian almost laughed.

“She told me same about you.”

Two men finally realized they had been competing inside a story Cambria wrote.

But neither could blame her for their affairs.

Dorian said:

“She lied.”

Julian answered:

“We still cheated.”

Dorian nodded.

For once, no excuse.

They were not rivals.

They were participants.

That conversation mattered more than macho confrontation.

Then Julian said something unexpected.

“Cambria never wanted either of us.”

Dorian frowned.

“She wanted to win against Arielle.”

Maybe.

Not entire truth.

Cambria wanted validation too.

But Arielle was center.

Dorian returned home understanding another painful fact.

His affair had not even been unique.

He had risked eight-year marriage to feel special—

to a woman running same emotional script with another man.

That humiliation was his to carry.
