Chapter 21 - “YOU WANTED ME DISABLED, NOT RECOVERING”

Tristan agreed to see Camilla once.
Private room at foundation offices.
Rebecca nearby but not inside.
No lawyers.
Camilla arrived first.
She looked nervous.
Tristan entered using a cane.
Not for symbolism.
He had physical therapy nearby and felt strong that morning.
Camilla noticed.
Then visibly tried not to.
Good.
“You look well,” she said.
“Today.”
That correction mattered.
They sat.
Camilla began:
“I’m sorry.”
“I read your letter.”
“I wanted to say it.”
“Okay.”
Silence.
Tristan looked at her.
“Why the gala?”
She answered honestly.
“I wanted to hurt you.”
“Why?”
“Because you didn't look hurt by me.”
He almost laughed.
“That simple?”
“Partly.”
“What else?”
“I wanted people to see I had moved on.”
“With Bryce.”
“Yes.”
“And me?”
“As past.”
He nodded.
“Why move the chair?”
Camilla’s eyes filled.
“Because I wanted control of where you were.”
There.
No excuse.
Tristan took that in.
“You know what I thought afterward?”
“What?”
“You wanted me disabled.”
Camilla flinched.
“No.”
“I know.”
He continued:
“You didn't need me permanently unable to walk.”
She stared.
“You needed everyone to believe the chair made me less credible.”
Camilla closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because if you were still fully yourself…”
He waited.
“…then maybe I was the one who changed.”
Tristan said nothing.
Camilla continued:
“I needed the accident to explain why we failed.”
“And if I recovered?”
“Then it couldn't.”
“Camilla.”
She looked at him.
“We failed before the chair.”
Her face changed.
“What?”
“We had problems before.”
“Not like after.”
“No.”
Tristan nodded.
“But they existed.”
He had controlled schedules.
Dismissed her discomfort.
Prioritized work.
Expected adaptation.
Camilla avoided direct conflict.
Needed social validation.
Both.
“The accident intensified everything,” he said.
“It didn't invent us.”
Camilla cried quietly.
“That makes it worse.”
“Maybe.”
“Do you forgive me?”
Tristan thought.
“For leaving?”
Her head snapped up.
“I was never angry you left.”
“You were.”
“I was hurt.”
“Same.”
“No.”
He leaned forward.
“You were allowed to leave.”
Tears.
Rebecca had said same.
Camilla laughed through crying.
“She told me.”
“She was right.”
“What about Bryce?”
“That hurt more.”
“Because I cheated emotionally.”
“Yes.”
“And gala?”
“I'm working on it.”
Fair.
Camilla nodded.
Then:
“Did you really stay that night to test everyone?”
“Partly.”
“That was manipulative.”
“Yes.”
She looked surprised.
Tristan continued:
“I felt people treating me differently and instead of addressing it, I withheld information to see what they'd reveal.”
“Why?”
“Control.”
They both laughed bitterly.
There it was.
Same trait.
Different expression.
Camilla said:
“You hated people controlling you after accident, so you controlled what they knew.”
“Yes.”
“And then judged them.”
“Yes.”
“That’s very you.”
“I know.”
For a moment they were almost the couple they had been.
Then not.
Camilla stood.
“What happens now?”
“For us?”
“Yes.”
“Nothing.”
She nodded.
Painful.
Accepted.
At door, Tristan said:
“Camilla.”
She turned.
“I hope you build a life that doesn't require someone else losing for you to know you won.”
She closed her eyes.
“That's fair.”
She left.
Tristan remained seated.
His leg hurt.
Emotionally, he felt neither victorious nor empty.
Just complete.
Closure was less dramatic than people promised.

Mostly it was a conversation after which there was no remaining question important enough to justify another.
