Chapter 24 - LUCIA’S DECISION

Three months after the gala, Lucia’s life was busier.

Supervisor shifts.

Training modules.

Conflict mediation.

Budget meetings she hated.

Less tip anxiety.

More email.

Tristan’s life also changed.

He began using a cane more often for short indoor distances.

Wheelchair for airports, long meetings, events, fatigue days.

Public stopped caring gradually.

That was another truth.

Scandals felt permanent only while trending.

One afternoon Tristan invited Lucia to a foundation community event.

Not gala.

Public park planning session.

She said:

“As guest?”

“Yes.”

“Employee?”

“No.”

“Date?”

Tristan paused.

Lucia smiled.

“Good.”

He laughed.

“Would you like it to be?”

“That is more direct.”

“I’m learning.”

She considered.

“Coffee first.”

“We already do.”

“Dinner.”

“Yes?”

“Dinner can be a date.”

He smiled.

“Okay.”

Slow.

No rescue romance.

No billionaire instantly marrying attendant.

Two adults negotiating.

At dinner Lucia asked:

“Why me?”

Tristan hated question.

“Because you’re attractive.”

She laughed.

“Good start.”

“You're funny.”

“Obviously.”

“You don't flatter me.”

“Dangerous.”

“And you make me notice when I use power as shortcut.”

Lucia became serious.

“That is not enough reason to date someone.”

“I know.”

“Good.”

“Also I like you.”

She smiled.

“Better.”

Then:

“I am not becoming your moral rehabilitation project.”

“I know.”

“Not your proof you changed.”

“I know.”

“Not quitting job.”

“I would never ask.”

“Good.”

Tristan said:

“My turn.”

Lucia raised eyebrow.

“I don't want to be the wheelchair man you rescued.”

“Excellent.”

“I don't want gratitude confused with relationship.”

“Excellent.”

“And I don't want you pretending my money isn't part of the reality.”

Lucia considered.

“That one's harder.”

“It exists.”

“Yes.”

“It changes options.”

“Yes.”

“So we talk about it.”

She nodded.

“Fine.”

That was the beginning.

Not grand.

Complicated.

Healthy enough.

Meanwhile Camilla moved apartments.

Smaller.

Not financially necessary.

Emotionally.

She wanted a place nobody associated with Tristan or Bryce.

She joined no foundation committees.

Focused on her design consultancy.

Therapy weekly.

Some friends disappeared after scandal.

Others stayed.

One asked:

“Do you regret leaving Tristan?”

Camilla answered:

“No.”

Surprised herself.

“I regret how I left.”

That distinction mattered.

She was allowed to leave an injured fiancé.

She was not entitled to rewrite his humanity to feel righteous.

Bryce continued Halston Capital.

Lost a few donor relationships.

Won other deals.

No destruction.

But his reputation in Boston nonprofit circles changed.

People read conflicts more carefully.

Maybe enough.

At foundation, accessibility consultants completed audit.

Recommendations:

Better aisle widths.

Mobility seating integrated rather than isolated.

Staff training.

No touching mobility devices without permission.

Remote participation policies.

Tristan read.

“Why didn't we have this before?”

Andrea answered:

“Because you didn't need it.”

He stared.

Exactly.

Institutions often discovered barriers only when powerful insiders experienced them.

Privilege could become leverage for reform if used correctly.

Tristan approved full implementation.

Not branded as Wexley Accessibility Initiative.

Consultants insisted.

Good.

No vanity.

At next gala planning meeting, Lucia was invited as hotel supervisor.

She looked at room plan.

“Wheelchair seating all at edge?”

Planner said:

“For easy access.”

Lucia shook her head.

“That can become segregation.”

Tristan watched from across table.

She did not look toward him for approval.

Good.

This was her expertise now.

Not his kindness story.

He smiled.

Rebecca noticed.

“Oh no.”

“What?”

“You’re happy.”

“Terrible.”

“Marriage?”

“Rebecca.”

“Too soon?”

“Much.”

“Good.”

Lucia heard.

“Very much.”

Everyone laughed.

No cliffhanger.

Just life moving into something less dramatic.

May you like

After months of people mistaking spectacle for truth, ordinary progress felt luxurious.
