Chapter 14 - Adrian's Last BargainAdrian Sloane called Daniel himself.

At 11:48 p.m.
Unknown number.
“Colonel.”
Daniel sat up.
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere dry.”
“You're bleeding.”
“Was.”
“Who hurt you?”
“Victor Harrow's contractor.”
“Why?”
“Because Nolan missed a payment.”
Daniel almost laughed from exhaustion.
“Everyone owes everyone.”
“That is a fair summary.”
“Where are you?”
“Not until we have terms.”
“You're a fugitive lawyer with forged estate documents.”
“I am also the person with evidence putting Nolan away for twenty years.”
“We already have plenty.”
“Not the important part.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“What important part?”
“Nolan moved money from military vendor accounts.”
Silence.
Mercer Systems held defense contracts.
That changed stakes.
“How much?”
“Seven million.”
“Government money?”
“Advance payments.”
Daniel stood.
“You helped?”
“I structured offsets.”
“That is federal fraud.”
“Yes.”
“And you're bargaining.”
“Yes.”
Adrian sounded tired.
“Daniel, I stopped pretending to be honorable months ago.”
Strangely honest.
“What do you want?”
“Protection from Harrow.”
“Police can protect you.”
“And consideration.”
“Not mine to promise.”
“Then bring federal prosecutor.”
Daniel did not negotiate alone.
By 2:00 a.m., a controlled call arranged.
Adrian agreed to surrender in exchange for safety and opportunity to cooperate.
Location:
Parking structure beneath a hospital in Glendale.
Police found him hiding in a maintenance room.
Cut above his eyebrow.
Bruised ribs.
Alive.
Victor Harrow later denied ordering assault.
Evidence eventually tied two contractors to unauthorized debt collection.
Not glamorous masterminds.
Just men using intimidation for money.
Adrian surrendered hard drives.
The scheme collapsed on paper.
Every forged filing.
Every transfer.
Every staged evaluation.
Every payment to Lucinda.
Every debt Nolan hid.
Adrian's own emails.
He didn't try to look good.
He tried to look useful.
Daniel sat outside interview room and watched through glass.
Adrian said:
“Nolan came to me with debt.”
“Lucinda came with anger.”
“I supplied method.”
Federal prosecutor asked,
“Whose idea was Gavin's guardianship?”
“Mine.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Why the boy?”
“Because Daniel's trust structure made him the control point.”
“Did you instruct Lucinda to provoke him?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell Nolan to document outbursts?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know reports were false?”
“Some.”
“How many?”
“Most.”
“Did you intend to send Gavin to Eastbridge?”
Adrian paused.
“No.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
The prosecutor asked.
Adrian continued.
“Threat only.”
“You drafted enrollment documents.”
“To make threat credible.”
Daniel felt rage rise.
To them, terror had been paperwork.
“Did Lucinda know?”
“Yes.”
“Did Nolan?”
“Yes.”
“What happened after court approval?”
“House sale.”
“Then?”
“Lucinda remains guardian for ninety days.”
“And after?”
Adrian hesitated.
The prosecutor waited.
“Nolan planned to challenge her.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
“Why?”
“Unfitness.”
“How?”
“Use the same evidence.”
Daniel stared.
They were going to do to Lucinda what they did to Gavin.
After she served her purpose, Nolan would submit recordings of her cruelty and instability.
Lucinda removed.
Professional fiduciary installed.
Which fiduciary?
Silver Ridge.
Owned partly by Adrian.
Nolan and Adrian would then control Gavin's assets without Lucinda.
She had been disposable.
Daniel almost felt pity.
Almost.
Then Adrian revealed Nolan's promised marriage was a lie.
Emails proved it.
Nolan to Adrian:
Once L finishes the sale, get her out. I can't have her near Gavin long-term.
Adrian:
You mean because she abuses him?
Nolan:
Because she is unpredictable.
The hypocrisy was breathtaking.
Nolan knew exactly what Lucinda was.
Used it.
Then planned to punish it.
Adrian's records also showed Lucinda once tried to stop.
June 12.
Message:
I'm not sending Gavin away. Find another way.
Nolan:
Nobody is sending him. Scare him.
Lucinda:
This is getting ugly.
Adrian:
Ugly is temporary. Insolvency isn't.
She continued anyway.
Choice.
Then the prosecutor asked:
“Did anyone have contact with Colonel Mercer while he was missing?”
“No.”
“Any involvement in attack or captivity?”
“No.”
“Any reason to believe Nolan did?”
“No.”
Daniel exhaled.
Again, truth stopped speculation.
His military trauma and family fraud intersected only because his absence created opportunity.
That was enough.
Then Adrian handed over one last folder.
GAVIN — POST-FRIDAY.
Daniel opened.
Inside was a proposed petition alleging Lucinda was emotionally abusive and financially reckless.
Photographs.
Audio.
Statements.
All true enough.
Nolan intended to remove her immediately after she helped him win.
Then page six.
Proposed successor guardian:
Nolan Mercer.
Daniel stared.
Despite his debt.
Despite fraud.
Despite affair.
Nolan still planned to put himself directly over Gavin.
Why?
Control of voting shares.
Daniel turned to Adrian.
“You knew Nolan would never stop.”
Adrian looked at him.
“No.”
“What?”
“I knew none of us would.”
Silence.
“That is what fraud does.”
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“You stop solving the original problem.”
“You start solving the consequences of the previous lie.”
Daniel closed the file.
Then prosecutor asked where Nolan's hidden military-vendor account records were stored.
Adrian answered.
“Mercer House.”
Daniel froze.
“Where?”
“Behind Colonel Mercer's memorial wall.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Lucinda had built a memorial display for him in the grand hall.
Uniform.
Flag.
Photographs.
