Chapter 8 - The Message Before DeploymentDaniel read the February messages until the words stopped looking real.

Lucinda:
He suspects I'm unhappy.
Nolan:
Don't change anything now.
Lucinda:
I hate pretending.
Nolan:
One more week.
Lucinda:
Then what?
Nolan:
Then we decide.
No murder plan.
No attack reference.
Nothing linking them to Daniel's disappearance.
Daniel forced himself to keep that distinction.
Pain wanted a bigger betrayal.
Evidence gave him only an affair and deception.
That was enough.
He would not invent more.
Tessa sat across from him.
“Your convoy information was classified.”
“Nolan couldn't have caused it.”
“Nothing here suggests that.”
Daniel nodded.
He needed to hear it aloud.
Gavin entered the library.
Daniel immediately turned the phone over.
Too late.
His son saw his face.
“What happened?”
“Nothing you need to deal with this second.”
Gavin stared.
Daniel hated himself.
He had promised not to hide.
“Sit.”
Gavin did.
Daniel chose the truth that belonged to him.
“Lucinda and Nolan were having a relationship before I disappeared.”
Gavin didn't react.
That was worse.
“You knew?”
“I saw them.”
Daniel stopped.
“When?”
“Last Christmas.”
“That was after.”
Gavin shook his head.
“No. Before your deployment Christmas.”
Daniel's chest tightened.
“What did you see?”
“Nolan kissed her in the garage.”
“Did they see you?”
“No.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Gavin looked ashamed.
“Lucinda said you were stressed.”
“She knew you saw?”
“She found me later.”
“What did she say?”
“That if I told you, you'd leave angry and maybe get distracted overseas.”
Daniel felt sick.
“She put that on you?”
Gavin nodded.
“She said if anything happened to you, I'd always wonder if I caused it.”
Daniel stood so abruptly his chair fell.
Gavin flinched.
Daniel immediately lowered his voice.
“I'm not angry at you.”
“I should have told.”
“No.”
“I knew.”
“You were thirteen.”
“I knew.”
Daniel crouched in front of him despite the pain.
“Listen to me.”
Gavin looked up.
“What happened to me overseas had nothing to do with you.”
His son's face cracked.
“Nothing.”
Gavin began crying.
Daniel pulled him close.
“I thought about it every day.”
“What?”
“That if I'd told you maybe you'd have stayed home.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Lucinda had put that poison into a child before he deployed.
Not physical abuse.
Something more precise.
A guilt trap designed to silence him.
Daniel held him tighter.
“You did not send me anywhere.”
Gavin cried harder.
“You didn't make the convoy disappear.”
Another breath.
“You didn't make Lucinda betray me.”
Gavin whispered,
“I hated her.”
“You were allowed.”
“I wanted Dad back so you could make her leave.”
Daniel swallowed.
“I'm back.”
They sat like that until Gavin's breathing slowed.
Then Daniel asked,
“What else did she make you keep quiet?”
The list hurt.
Lucinda searched Gavin's phone.
Read texts to Evelyn.
Blocked his grandmother's number for two weeks.
Told him Evelyn didn't want him.
Sold Anna's piano without telling him.
Removed family photographs.
Made Gavin eat separately after he argued at dinner.
Threatened Eastbridge.
Told relatives Gavin had become unstable.
And repeatedly told him:
“Your father chose the Army over you.”
Daniel felt each sentence.
He had chosen service.
He had also loved his son.
Both could be true.
Lucinda weaponized one against the other.
“Did Nolan know?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“He was here all the time.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Nolan wasn't simply financing the scheme.
He watched Gavin live inside it.
Later that afternoon, Rowan arrived with news.
Northstar ownership records had been unsealed under emergency subpoena.
Nolan owned 60%.
Adrian Sloane 20%.
The remaining 20% belonged to—
Lucinda Mercer.
Daniel stared.
“She wasn't just paid.”
“No.”
“She owned the company taking money from Gavin's trust.”
“Yes.”
Total withdrawals:
$3.6 million.
Of that, $910,000 transferred directly to Lucinda-controlled accounts.
The rest funded legal fees, debt service, private investigators, and Nolan's margin payments.
“Private investigators?”
Daniel frowned.
Rowan nodded.
“They followed several people.”
“Who?”
“Evelyn.”
Expected.
“Grace Holloway.”
Expected.
“Gavin.”
Daniel's face hardened.
“And you.”
Daniel stopped.
“Me?”
“Before deployment.”
Photographs showed Daniel driving to work.
Meeting Tessa? No, before event.
Stopping at a bank.
Visiting a law office.
Why follow him?
One photograph dated February 26.
Daniel leaving the office of attorney Miriam Kane.
Lucinda never knew about that visit.
Neither did Nolan.
Daniel did.
He had gone to update his estate documents.
The day before Lucinda and Nolan's messages.
“What did you change?” Rowan asked.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
He remembered.
He had discovered irregularities in Nolan's company expenses—not the full debt, just enough to worry him.
So Daniel changed one thing.
He removed Nolan as successor guardian for Gavin.
Replaced him with Evelyn.
He also instructed that Nolan would lose temporary voting authority over Daniel's shares if Daniel died.
Daniel never told Nolan.
Or Lucinda.
Yet two days later, they seemed desperate for him to leave without changing anything else.
Rowan asked,
“Who knew about the meeting?”
“Attorney Miriam Kane.”
“Anyone in her office?”
“Staff.”
They called.
Miriam answered.
Then went silent when Daniel identified himself.
“Colonel Mercer.”
“You knew I changed my will.”
“Yes.”
“Who else knew?”
“No one should have.”
“Should.”
Silence.
“Miriam.”
She whispered,
“My paralegal resigned the next day.”
“Name?”
“Chloe Sloane.”
Daniel stopped.
“Sloane?”
“Adrian's daughter.”
The family lawyer's daughter had worked inside Daniel's private attorney's office.
Daniel's confidential estate changes were compromised before he deployed.
Nolan and Lucinda knew Daniel had cut Nolan out.
That gave them motive to forge a replacement after he disappeared.
Then Miriam added something worse.
“Daniel, the original documents are gone.”
“What?”
“Your signed estate amendment.”
“When?”
“We discovered it missing after your memorial.”
“Who accessed the file?”
“Chloe.”
Daniel looked at Rowan.
The forged documents weren't built from nothing.
May you like
They may have been created by replacing pages in Daniel's genuine estate package.
And somewhere, Adrian Sloane's daughter knew exactly how.
