Chapter 21 - THE COMPANY CANNOT BE SAVED WITH MAISIE’S MONEY

Caleb sold Hendersonville.

He cried when the papers were signed.

I sat beside him.

No advice.

He asked:

“Do you think Hannah would hate me?”

“No.”

“You don’t know.”

“No.”

I corrected.

“I don’t know.”

Better.

He laughed.

“You’ve become annoying.”

“Lawyers.”

We sat.

Then he said:

“I really didn’t know at first.”

“I believe you.”

“And then I did.”

“Yes.”

“I keep trying to make the first part erase the second.”

I looked at him.

“That’s what everyone does.”

He nodded.

Blue Ridge’s buyer retained the facility name for six months.

Then changed it.

Caleb lost something he had built for twelve years.

That was consequence.

Not punishment imposed by me.

Financial reality.

Later he began consulting for elder-care operations instead of owning facilities.

Smaller.

Less status.

More stable.

He repaid the final amount personally over eighteen months.

At the last transfer he texted:

Done.

I replied:

Received by trustee.

He called immediately.

“You couldn’t say congratulations?”

“No.”

Then laughed.

“Congratulations.”

He laughed too.

Repair without pretending.

We remained brothers.

Different.

May you like

Probably healthier.
