Chapter 14 - What William Helped BuryNobody spoke for several seconds.

Daniel stared at his father.
“You helped bury Arthur Bennett?”
William looked at the ledger.
“I was twenty-four.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“My father came to me after it happened.”
“What happened?”
“Henry and Arthur argued at a construction site.”
“About ownership?”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
“Henry struck him.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“With what?”
“A steel level.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Vanessa looked toward the fire.
Her grandfather.
The man whose death had shaped her mother’s life.
William continued.
“Arthur fell. Hit his head. Henry said he was already dead.”
“You believed him?”
“I wanted to.”
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“What did you do?”
“My father told me the company would disappear if police investigated. He said hundreds of families depended on us.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“The family motto.”
William lowered his eyes.
“I arranged payment to a contractor.”
“To hide the body.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
William said nothing.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Tell him.”
Margaret whispered, “Vanessa…”
“No.”
Vanessa turned toward her.
“You don’t get to protect him.”
For once, Daniel agreed.
“Where?”
William looked at the lake.
“Bennett Quarry.”
Claire stared.
Whitmore Development had transformed the old quarry into luxury homes twelve years earlier.
Daniel felt sick.
“We built houses over him?”
“Probably.”
“Probably?”
“I never knew the exact location.”
Vanessa laughed without humor.
“My mother spent forty-five years wondering where her father was.”
William’s voice broke.
“I know.”
“No. You don’t.”
Vanessa’s anger finally stopped looking calculated.
This was real.
“My mother thought he abandoned her. Then she thought your family killed him. Then she spent the rest of her life trying to prove it while every Whitmore smiled for magazine covers.”
Daniel looked at his wife.
For one dangerous moment, he understood her rage.
Not her actions.
Never the drugging.
Never Margaret’s hair.
Never the attempt on Daniel’s life.
But the origin.
She had inherited a wound no one acknowledged.
“Why didn’t you expose this legally?” he asked.
“My mother tried.”
“What happened?”
“Lawyers buried her.”
“Then you could have come to me.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Would you have believed me?”
Daniel opened his mouth.
Then remembered Maria.
He had seen a clipper at her feet and struck her before listening.
Would he have believed a young woman accusing his beloved family of murder and theft?
Perhaps not.
Vanessa saw the answer.
“That’s what I thought.”
Daniel shook his head.
“So you married me.”
“Yes.”
“Was any of it real?”
Vanessa looked away.
That hurt more than he expected.
“Was any of it real?”
She swallowed.
“At first, no.”
Daniel felt the words.
“Later?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“That made everything worse.”
Caleb’s affair surfaced in Daniel’s mind.
“You loved me so much you slept with my lawyer?”
Vanessa flinched.
“Caleb was part of the plan before you were.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“I don’t know what I felt anymore.”
William interrupted.
“Enough.”
Vanessa turned.
“You don’t get to say enough.”
Margaret spoke softly.
“She’s right.”
Everyone looked at her.
Margaret stood slowly.
Her uneven silver hair made her look vulnerable, but her voice was steady.
“We all keep asking what Vanessa became without asking what we built around her.”
Daniel stared at his mother.
“That doesn’t excuse what she did to you.”
“No.”
Margaret touched her shaved scalp.
“It does not.”
She looked at Vanessa.
“You humiliated me.”
Vanessa’s eyes dropped.
“You drugged my son.”
Silence.
“You tried to make him believe I was losing my mind.”
Vanessa said nothing.
“You tried to frame Maria.”
Still nothing.
“And you intended to take everything.”
Vanessa looked up.
“Yes.”
Margaret nodded.
“Then we stop lying.”
She placed the original trust beside the Bennett ledger.
“All of it becomes public.”
William went pale.
“Margaret.”
“All of it.”
“That destroys the company.”
“Maybe.”
“Thousands of employees—”
Margaret looked at him.
“Do not use them to hide behind our crimes.”
Daniel almost smiled.
Finally.
Truth without the word protection attached.
Then Vanessa reached into her purse.
Police outside heard Daniel’s transmitter shift.
Brooks moved her team closer.
Vanessa removed a small remote control.
Daniel stared.
“What is that?”
She held it up.
“A guarantee.”
“Of what?”
“That nobody leaves here with the originals.”
Margaret’s eyes widened.
Vanessa pressed a button.

A faint click sounded somewhere below them.
Then Daniel smelled gasoline.
