Chapter 18 - The Person Who Wanted Daniel to Discover EverythingDetective Brooks found the source of the anonymous messages three days later.

Not easily.
The number had bounced through encrypted services.
Photographs were stripped of metadata.
Whoever sent them understood surveillance.
But the image of the blue folder contained a reflection in the car window.
A hand.
A distinctive gold ring.
Daniel recognized it.
He had seen the ring every day of his childhood.
His father’s college ring.
William.
Daniel stared at him across the hospital room.
“You sent the messages.”
William did not deny it.
“Yes.”
“You had the blue folder.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I took it from Caleb’s car.”
“You were watching the mansion.”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Months.”
Daniel’s anger rose.
“You watched Vanessa drug me?”
“I suspected.”
“You watched her isolate Mom?”
“Yes.”
“You watched her and Caleb?”
“Yes.”
“And instead of coming to me, you sent anonymous riddles?”
William looked ashamed.
“I needed you to discover it yourself.”
“Why?”
“Because if I appeared, you wouldn’t know who to trust.”
Daniel laughed.
“So you manipulated me to teach me not to trust manipulation?”
William closed his eyes.
“When you say it that way…”
“How else would I say it?”
William sat.
“I had spent years collecting evidence against everyone. Margaret. Vanessa. Caleb. Northline.”
“You treated your family like an investigation.”
“I didn’t know another way.”
Daniel looked toward the window.
“Do you know who I trusted?”
William said nothing.
“Maria.”
“Your mother’s caregiver?”
“The woman I slapped because Vanessa framed her.”
William looked shocked.
Daniel continued.
“Do you know why I trust her now?”
“No.”
“Because she was the only person who never needed me to believe a story that benefited her.”
Silence.
William absorbed that.
Daniel shifted painfully against the hospital bed.
The bullet had passed through his side without striking vital organs.
He was lucky.
Again.
“Why did you return now?”
“Caleb found me.”
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
Daniel stared.
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
“What did he want?”
“The Bennett ledger.”
“Did you have it?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
“Laura.”
Vanessa’s mother.
Daniel frowned.
“Where is she?”
William looked at him.
“That’s the problem.”
Laura Bennett had vanished four months earlier.
No bank activity.
No phone.
No travel records.
Daniel immediately thought of Marcus Hale.
Another missing person.
“Caleb?”
“I believe so.”
They questioned him.
Caleb denied harming Laura.
He admitted killing Marcus after Marcus threatened to expose the financial theft.
But Laura?
“No.”
Brooks showed him photographs.
Caleb laughed.
“Vanessa took care of her mother.”
Daniel felt cold.
He went to see Vanessa.
When he asked about Laura, she stopped speaking.
“Is your mother alive?”
Vanessa looked through the glass.
“Ask Caleb.”
“He says ask you.”
“Of course.”
“Vanessa.”
Her eyes filled.
“She found out about the lake-house plan.”
“When?”
“Four months ago.”
“What did she do?”
“She told me to leave.”
“You didn’t.”
“No.”
“She threatened Caleb.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“They argued.”
“Where?”
“Northline’s warehouse.”
“And?”
“I left.”
Daniel stared.
“You left your mother with him?”
“I was angry.”
“What happened next?”
“Caleb told me she went away.”
“And you believed him?”
“I wanted to.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Another body.
Another person who chose not to ask.
Police searched the warehouse.
Blood traces.
Laura’s.
Enough to indicate serious injury.
No body.
Then officers found a hidden storage locker rented under Marcus Hale’s name.
Inside were Laura’s belongings.
Passport.
Wallet.
Wedding ring.
And a video camera.
The memory card contained one recording.
Laura Bennett sat alone in front of the lens.
“If Vanessa ever sees this, then I failed her.”
Daniel watched beside Brooks.
Laura spoke about Arthur Bennett.
Her father.
About growing up believing he had abandoned her.
About discovering the Whitmores had stolen his company.
About teaching Vanessa that revenge was justice.
Then she cried.
“I gave my daughter my hatred and called it inheritance.”
Daniel looked away.
Laura continued.
“Vanessa thinks she is reclaiming our family. She is destroying herself.”
Then Laura revealed why she confronted Caleb.
She had discovered his hidden account.
Eighteen million stolen from Northline.
More important, she had learned the life-insurance plan was his idea.
“He convinced Vanessa that Daniel’s death would solve everything.”
Laura leaned toward the camera.
“But Caleb has another policy.”
Daniel went still.
“On whom?” Brooks whispered.
Laura answered.
“Vanessa.”
Daniel stared.
A thirty-million-dollar policy.
Beneficiary controlled through a shell company linked to Caleb.
Vanessa had believed Caleb was helping her kill Daniel.
All along, Caleb intended for Daniel to die first.
Then Vanessa.
He would inherit the stolen money and erase the two people who could expose him.
Daniel went to the detention center one final time.
Vanessa listened as he told her.
Her face slowly collapsed.
“He was going to kill me?”
“Yes.”
She laughed once.
Then began sobbing.
Daniel felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
Vanessa looked through the glass.
“Daniel…”
He waited.
“I destroyed you for a man who planned to bury me too.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
She looked at him.
May you like
“You destroyed us because you chose to.”
That truth left her with nowhere to hide.
