Chapter 10 - THE BRUISE ON MARIA’S SHOULDERPolice questioned Maria.

She did not resist.

Her archive access came from a routine household-management authorization granted two years earlier.

She used it only once to retrieve Hazel’s birth certificate for school enrollment.

Digital records confirmed that visit.

Celeste’s attorney seized on the suspicion.

The heroic housekeeper now appeared connected to the forged trust document.

Maria looked at Jonathan.

“If you think I did this, say it.”

“I don’t.”

“Because you trust me?”

“Because the records show what you accessed.”

Maria nodded.

“Evidence first.”

Not blind trust.

Not emotional loyalty.

Evidence.

The archive system showed another login using Maria’s access code after midnight three months earlier.

Maria was visiting family in Queens that night.

Security footage showed Celeste entering the archive office wearing Maria’s black winter coat.

She had obtained the code from a household file.

Celeste deliberately created a trail toward Maria.

If the trust fraud was discovered, the housekeeper would become the suspect.

The scheme explained the lawsuit.

Celeste was not merely retaliating.

She was building a second defense.

Dr. Felix Warren began cooperating.

He admitted Celeste wanted Hazel declared emotionally unstable.

The residential placement would separate Hazel from Jonathan and Maria.

Then Celeste planned to become co-trustee of Olivia’s twenty-million-dollar fund.

“What did she want the money for?” investigators asked.

Felix did not know.

Financial records provided the answer.

Celeste carried nearly nine million dollars in hidden personal debt.

Failed investments.

Luxury purchases.

Loans secured through false asset statements.

She needed Hazel’s trust to protect her lifestyle.

The seven-year-old child was not only an emotional obstacle.

She was a financial target.

At Maria’s medical appointment, the bruise remained dark red.

The doctor expected full recovery but warned that pain might continue for months.

Hazel sat beside her.

“Will your shoulder always remember?”

“Maybe a little.”

“My head remembers.”

Maria looked at her.

“That may also hurt for a while.”

“How do we make it stop?”

“We don’t force it to stop. We show it that you are safe now.”

Hazel touched the white sling.

“You got hurt because of me.”

“No.”

Maria’s voice became firm.

“I got hurt because Celeste swung the club.”

“But you moved.”

“I chose to protect you. Celeste chose to create the danger. Those choices are not equal.”

Jonathan heard from the doorway.

The same lesson applied to him.

He chose a woman he did not fully understand.

That did not make him responsible for her attack.

It made him responsible for examining why he ignored warnings.

The trust investigator recovered another document.

Celeste had prepared a petition claiming Jonathan was emotionally unfit after Olivia’s death.

If successful, an outside guardian would control Hazel.

The proposed guardian was Felix Warren.

Once appointed, Felix intended to name Celeste financial manager.

They had planned to remove Jonathan’s authority entirely.

Then Felix disclosed something worse.

Celeste had not expected the golf-club incident to happen that evening.

She intended to provoke Hazel into a recorded tantrum.

The club changed the plan because Maria found the hidden phone.

Celeste raised it to stop Maria from reaching the recording.

But Hazel had been directly beneath its path.
