Chapter 17 - MARIA WAS THE ONLY WITNESSCeleste’s attorney attacked Maria’s credibility before trial.

He argued that she exaggerated concerns after Jonathan promised financial support.

Maria released employment records showing no unusual payments.

She had received medical costs, salary and approved legal fees.

Nothing else.

Then the attorney suggested Maria wanted to replace Celeste in the mansion.

Maria answered publicly only once.

“Protecting a child does not make me her mother, and working in a home does not make me its owner.”

The statement ended the speculation more effectively than Jonathan’s lawyers could.

Still, being the central witness carried pressure.

Photographers waited outside Maria’s apartment.

Strangers sent messages.

Some praised her as a hero.

Others accused her of destroying a marriage.

Maria disliked both versions.

“I didn’t feel brave,” she told her attorney.

“I felt the club hit me.”

Hazel understood better than the adults.

“Can heroes be scared?”

Maria nodded.

“They usually are.”

“Then why do people say they’re not?”

“Because fear is harder to put in a headline.”

Before trial, Maria returned to the marble kitchen for a court-approved scene review.

The room had been cleaned.

A replacement security camera glowed above the entrance.

The black steel golf club remained in evidence.

Maria stood where she had shielded Hazel.

Her body remembered the impact.

Pain moved through her shoulder though no one touched her.

She closed her eyes.

Jonathan waited nearby.

“Do you want to leave?”

“Yes.”

“Then we leave.”

Maria opened her eyes.

“No. I mean part of me wants to leave.”

“You don’t have to prove anything.”

“I’m not proving it to you.”

She knelt carefully.

The action brought back Hazel’s small body beneath hers.

Celeste’s heels against marble.

The rush of air before impact.

Maria stood again.

“I’m ready.”

Investigators confirmed the location supported her statement.

The angle from the hidden phone matched the bruise.

She had not lunged at Celeste.

She turned away.

Her defensive position was unmistakable.

Hazel did not attend the reconstruction.

She remained with her therapist.

When Maria returned, Hazel asked:

“Was the kitchen still scary?”

“Yes.”

“Did you go in?”

“Yes.”

“Is it not scary now?”

Maria considered.

“It can be scary and still be a kitchen.”

Hazel smiled.

They were both learning that healing did not require places to lose every painful memory.

It required new experiences strong enough to exist beside them.

That evening, the security expert delivered the last camera recovery.

Two minutes were missing from the main server.

The emergency memory preserved them.

The clip showed Celeste speaking to the dark camera before Hazel entered.

She said:

“After tonight, Jonathan will finally believe his daughter needs to be removed.”

Then she placed Olivia’s porcelain cup on the island.
