SHE WAS NEVER JUST THE MAID / Chapter 22 / 23

Chapter 22 - JASPER LEARNS THAT LEAVING ISN’T DISAPPEARINGTime did work speeches couldn’t.

Mabel traveled.

Returned.

Visited on schedule.

Missed one visit because flu.

Jasper disappointed, not panicked.

She called:

“I’m sick.”

“Not leaving.”

He:

“I know.”

Good.

Frank became steady companion.

Jasper liked because Frank taught fishing.

Mabel spent Christmas morning at cottage, afternoon Aldridge.

No uniform.

Valerie respected.

Sofia took vacation.

Returned.

Jasper okay.

People left and came back.

Elliot traveled three nights.

Video called.

Returned when said.

Predictability repaired.

At age eight, Jasper told therapist:

“Mabel retired.”

No tears.

“What does retired mean?”

“She does whatever.”

Accurate.

He still loved.

He no longer confused proximity with security.

Valerie learned too.

When Mabel planned two-week trip to Nova Scotia, Valerie felt old fear:

Jasper upset.

He shrugged:

“Can she send postcard?”

“Yes.”

Done.

Valerie laughed alone.

How much pain adults create anticipating child cannot handle what child can.

Mabel sent postcard:

Saw lighthouse. Frank hates boats. Love, Mabel.

Jasper pinned.

At school assignment “people in my family,” he included Mabel under People I Love, not family tree maybe.

Valerie felt no sting.

Progress real.
