Chapter 1 - KEEP WATCHING

Maria Santos knew better than to run into the living room the moment she saw the belt.

Six months earlier, she would have.

Six months earlier, she had still believed that if she told Ethan Harper the truth plainly enough, truth would be enough.

Victoria had cured her of that belief.

Maria stood at the far end of the hall, half concealed by the archway leading from the service corridor into the main living room of the Harper residence. The mansion was unusually quiet for a Wednesday afternoon. Bright September light fell across the pale sofa, the marble floor, and the first three steps of the sweeping staircase.

Eight-year-old Lily Harper stood with her back against the sofa.

Victoria stood in front of her.

A thin brown leather belt hung from one hand.

Lily’s eyes were already wet.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Victoria’s face remained calm.

That was what frightened Maria most.

Victoria almost never lost control in the obvious way. Anger did not make her louder. It made her more precise.

“Sorry isn’t enough.”

Maria’s first instinct was to move.

Then she remembered the broken perfume bottle.

Victoria had smashed it herself two months earlier, then told Ethan Maria had knocked it from the dresser during an argument.

Maria had been lucky. A delivery driver had seen Victoria throw it.

Then there had been Lily’s missing tablet.

Victoria told Ethan Maria had confiscated it without permission. Maria later found the tablet beneath Victoria’s own desk.

No apology followed.

Only:

“Misunderstanding.”

Maria had begun to notice a pattern.

Every incident ended with her defending herself.

Every explanation made her look more defensive.

And every time Ethan came home, Victoria got to speak first.

Not today.

Maria pulled her phone from the pocket of her navy uniform.

She pressed record.

A red dot appeared.

Victoria stepped closer to Lily.

“Hold out your arm.”

Lily shook her head.

“Please.”

“Do it.”

Maria’s hand tightened around the phone.

This was the point where waiting became dangerous.

She needed enough.

Not more.

Enough.

Lily slowly extended one arm.

Victoria raised the belt.

The strike came once.

Across the upper arm.

Lily cried out.

“That hurts!”

Maria stopped recording only after the sound registered.

Then she ran.

“Enough!”

Victoria spun around.

Maria crossed the room, pulled Lily behind her, then wrapped both arms around the girl.

Lily pressed her face into Maria’s shoulder.

Maria could feel her shaking.

Victoria stared at her.

“You dare interfere with my family?”

“You’re not touching her again.”

Maria did not raise her voice.

Victoria smiled.

Small.

Cold.

“You should be careful.”

Maria knew that smile.

It meant Victoria had already moved past the event itself and into the story she would tell about it.

Then the front door opened.

All three turned.

Ethan Harper stepped inside.

Charcoal suit. White shirt. Phone still in one hand.

He had returned early from Manhattan.

For one second, no one moved.

Maria held Lily.

Victoria held the belt.

Then Victoria changed.

Maria had seen her perform before.

Never this fast.

Her shoulders dropped.

Her face softened.

Fear appeared.

She let the belt fall beside the sofa and rushed toward Ethan.

“Ethan!”

He frowned.

“What happened?”

Victoria pointed at Maria.

“She’s turning Lily against me.”

Maria stared.

“That’s not true, sir.”

Victoria cut across her.

“She has been undermining me for months. Today she threatened to hit Lily when I tried to discipline her.”

Maria almost admired the speed of it.

Ethan looked at her.

Then Lily.

Lily’s face was hidden against Maria.

“Maria?”

Ethan’s voice was cautious.

That hurt.

Not because he accused her.

Because he was considering it.

Victoria moved beside him.

“She even told Lily not to listen to me.”

“No.”

Maria released Lily gently.

“Sir.”

Victoria started again.

“Ethan, she’s been—”

Maria pulled out her phone.

“I knew she would say that.”

Victoria froze.

It was the first honest expression Maria had seen on her face all afternoon.

Maria extended the phone.

“I recorded everything.”

Victoria went pale.

“Give me that.”

Ethan took it first.

“What did you record?”

“Play it.”

Victoria stepped toward him.

“Ethan, don’t.”

He looked at her.

“Why?”

“It’s out of context.”

Maria said nothing.

That was important.

Let the evidence speak before interpretation contaminated it.

Ethan pressed play.

On the screen:

Lily against the sofa.

Victoria with the belt.

Sorry isn’t enough.

Hold out your arm.

Then the strike.

The sound of Lily crying.

Ethan stopped breathing for a second.

His eyes lifted.

Victoria spoke quickly.

“I was disciplining her. I know it looks bad, but Maria—”

“Keep watching.”

Maria’s voice was quiet.

Victoria looked at her.

There was real fear now.

Ethan resumed.

The video continued beyond the strike because Maria had not stopped immediately.

Victoria crouched near Lily before Maria entered frame.

Her recorded voice:

“If your father asks…”

Lily sniffed.

“…tell him Maria hit you.”

Ethan’s face changed.

In the video, Lily whispered:

“But Maria didn’t hit me.”

Victoria answered:

“Then learn how to lie.”

The room became completely still.

Ethan lowered the phone.

Victoria stepped toward him.

“Ethan, listen to me.”

He turned.

The slap came once.

Open hand.

Hard enough that Victoria staggered sideways.

Two teeth struck the marble floor.

No blood.

Victoria touched her mouth.

Her eyes widened.

“You… slapped me?”

Ethan stared at her.

“You hurt my daughter.”

His voice was almost flat.

“Then planned to blame Maria?”

Victoria looked down at the two teeth.

Then back at him.

For a brief second, Maria saw something important.

Not shame.

Calculation.

Maria knew instantly the slap had changed everything.

Ethan did not know it yet.

He was still staring at his wife.

Maria looked at the phone.

“Sir…”

He turned.

“There’s more.”

Victoria’s head snapped up.

“No.”

Maria met Ethan’s eyes.

“The recording continued.”

Victoria moved toward the phone.

“DON’T WATCH IT!”

Ethan stepped back.

His thumb hovered over the screen.

Maria saw Lily near the sofa, silent now, watching adults turn her fear into a battlefield.

Maria crossed to the child instead of the phone.

She placed one hand on Lily’s shoulder.

Ethan pressed play.

On the screen, Victoria’s recorded voice continued.

“Once Maria is gone, your father will finally sign the papers.”

Lily whispered:

“What papers?”

Victoria replied:

“The school papers.”

Ethan slowly looked up.

Victoria stopped moving.

Lily’s recorded voice came next.

“I don’t want to go away.”

Victoria:

“Then you should have learned how to behave.”

Ethan stared at his wife.

“What school?”

Victoria said nothing.

The recording continued.

Victoria’s voice:

“Dr. Bell already believes me.”

Ethan frowned.

“Who the hell is Dr. Bell?”

And for the first time since walking through the front door, Ethan understood that the belt might not have been the beginning of the problem.

May you like

It might have been the moment the problem became visible.
