Chapter 18 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE CHARITYCeleste Arden had not always stolen.

That truth mattered.
At thirty-four, she had founded the Arden Family Foundation after her younger sister died because a rural hospital lacked specialist care.
For fifteen years, Celeste worked relentlessly.
She raised millions.
Opened clinics.
Built partnerships.
She was not pretending to care.
She cared.
Then her husband died.
Control of the family’s public image fell almost entirely to her.
The foundation became her identity.
Then came the vineyard investment.
Five million dollars.
A disaster.
Celeste refused to admit it.
She moved private expenses into consulting budgets.
At first, temporary.
She would replace everything.
Then donor events became more extravagant.
Flights.
Designers.
Consultants.
C.A. Strategic Consulting became the place where inconvenient expenses disappeared.
Calvin Avery handled details.
Celeste told herself programs were still funded.
No patient suffered.
No clinic closed.
Therefore, what harm?
That was how boundaries moved.
Then Nora arrived.
Nora asked questions.
Celeste liked her at first.
Educated.
Composed.
Useful on committees.
Then dangerous.
Nora did not care what answers sounded respectable.
She cared whether numbers reconciled.
When Celeste learned Nora had requested three years of vendor records, she panicked.
Calvin suggested “reputation pressure.”
Nothing illegal, he promised.
Monitor her.
Find inconsistencies.
Make the board question whether Nora had become obsessive.
Celeste agreed.
She told herself she was protecting the foundation.
When Calvin escalated to the restroom photograph, Celeste claimed later she did not know the details.
The evidence would ultimately suggest otherwise.
But perhaps even Celeste had stopped asking what she authorized.
Like Ethan.
Like everyone around power.
They approved consequences without looking closely enough at methods.

The difference was that Celeste had created the system.
And now it was collapsing on her.
