Chapter 20 - THE BOARD MEETINGThe emergency board meeting lasted four hours.

Celeste arrived first.
Perfect navy suit.
Pearls.
Controlled expression.
Nora arrived with Priya and Marcus.
Ethan came alone.
Warren did not attend.
Nora had not asked him.
He respected that.
The independent audit presented preliminary findings.
Unsupported expenses.
Improper reimbursements.
Conflicts of interest.
Payments to C.A. Strategic Consulting without adequate documentation.
Funds connected to Derek’s surveillance.
Celeste challenged everything.
“Administrative errors.”
“Misclassified expenses.”
“Calvin exceeded authority.”
Then Nora’s attorney introduced emails.
One from Celeste to Calvin:
Nora must stop looking credible before the finance committee meets. Handle it.
Another:
Use the medication issue if necessary.
Silence.
Celeste’s face changed.
Ethan looked at his mother.
“Medication.”
Celeste said nothing.
He repeated:
“You knew.”
“Ethan.”
“You knew what they were trying to photograph.”
“I did not know the restroom.”
“You knew enough.”
The phrase hit Nora.
The same phrase she had used on Ethan.
He understood now.
Board chairman Samuel Price called for a vote.
Temporary removal of Celeste from foundation authority pending full audit.
Celeste looked at Ethan.
Her son held one vote.
She expected him.
Of course she did.
“Ethan.”
He stared at her.
For thirty-nine years, his reflex had been obedience disguised as loyalty.
He looked at Nora.
Then back at his mother.
“This isn’t about choosing Nora.”
Celeste’s eyes narrowed.
“It’s about choosing facts.”
The vote began.
Ethan raised his hand.
In favor of removal.
Celeste stared.
Something in her face broke.
Not because the vote would pass.
Because her son had finally stopped confusing love with protection from consequences.
The motion carried.
Celeste stood.
Walked out.
No shouting.
No dramatic collapse.
Just the sound of the boardroom door closing.
Nora exhaled.
Ethan looked at her.
She nodded once.
Not forgiveness.
Recognition.
May you like
He had finally looked directly at the truth.
And this time, he had not looked away.
