Chapter 13 - Uncle MasonMason Caldwell didn't run.

He was at his house in Malibu drinking coffee when police arrived.
He invited them in.
That confidence worried Brooks.
Mason's attorney joined within twenty minutes.
Everything he said was measured.
Yes, he knew Preston.
Yes, they discussed family history.
No, he did not participate in theft.
Yes, he gave Preston archival information.
Because Preston had a legitimate interest in Malcolm's historical claim.
No, he didn't know about Serena's accusation.
No, he didn't know Preston disabled cameras.
The recovered messages contradicted enough to make him uncomfortable.
Not enough yet to prove conspiracy.
Brooks attended the interview with counsel.
Mason looked at him.
“You have Arthur's posture.”
Brooks laughed.
“Apparently not his DNA.”
Mason's expression barely moved.
He knew.
“How long?” Brooks asked.
“Since you were a child.”
“So everybody knew except me.”
“Not everybody.”
“Enough.”
Mason sipped water.
Brooks asked,
“Why Preston?”
“Because your father ruined him.”
“Malcolm ruined Malcolm.”
Mason smiled.
“You sound like Arthur.”
“Maybe parenting works.”
That landed.
Mason disliked it.
Brooks continued.
“You hated Dad.”
“I loved my brother.”
“Then sold his plans.”
“I made a mistake.”
“You blame Edwin.”
“He made sure Arthur never forgave me.”
Edwin wasn't present.
Brooks answered,
“Edwin didn't make you sell anything.”
Mason's jaw tightened.
There.
Same pattern again.
Every person in the conspiracy had turned their choice into someone else's fault.
Mason said,
“Arthur used secrets to control people.”
“That part I believe.”
“He hid your paternity.”
“Yes.”
“Preston's inheritance.”
“Yes.”
“Caleb.”
“Yes.”
“Daniel.”
“Yes.”
Brooks leaned forward.
“And you used those secrets too.”
Mason stopped.
“What's the difference?”
“I am not pretending Dad was right.”
Silence.
Brooks continued.
“He crossed lines. Forged one signature. Hid things. Protected people he should have exposed.”
Mason stared.
“But you don't get to use his wrongdoing as permission for yours.”
Mason looked away.
That was the center of everything.
Preston used Malcolm.
Serena used fear.
Damian? no, different story. Keep no.
Mason used Arthur.
Everyone inherited an excuse.
Police found financial transfers from one of Mason's trusts to a private investigations firm.
That firm photographed Serena kissing Preston.
Brooks stared at the invoice.
Mason had arranged the blackmail.
Not Preston alone.
Serena looked sick when told.
“Why?”
Mason answered through counsel.
Then detectives found something else.
A payment to Marcus Bell.
The security technician.
$75,000.
Brooks's stomach dropped.
Marcus had recovered the footage.
Helped expose Serena.
Had he also helped disable systems?
Police questioned him.
Marcus broke within forty minutes.
He admitted Preston approached him a year earlier.
Paid for maintenance schedules.
Not full access.
Then Mason increased the money.
Marcus created backdoor credentials.
He claimed he never knew about theft or false accusations.
Only surveillance.
Brooks asked,
“Why did he help us last night?”
The detective answered,
“Because he realized the plan was collapsing.”
Marcus had switched sides when Serena blurted out the camera was broken.
He preserved footage to protect himself.
Again.
Self-interest.
Not loyalty.
Edwin seemed unsurprised.
Brooks asked him,
“Did you trust anyone in this house?”
Edwin smiled sadly.
“Your father taught me not to confuse trust with the absence of verification.”
Arthur again.
Useful lesson.
Dangerous if taken too far.
Police arrested Marcus for unauthorized access and conspiracy-related charges.
Mason remained under investigation.
Then the board called an emergency meeting.
News had leaked.
Not the false accusation yet.
But financial irregularities.
Caldwell Holdings stock dropped twelve percent before noon.
Board members wanted Brooks to step aside temporarily.
Why?
Conflict.
Potential trust dispute.
Possible assault allegation.
Serena's accusation had still done damage.
Even after collapsing.
Brooks looked at the board video.
“Edwin has not accused me of assault.”
A director said,
“Doesn't matter. Witnesses saw you shove him.”
True.
Brooks turned toward Edwin.
“I did.”
Edwin nodded.
“And I was wrong.”
The board members went silent.
Brooks continued.
“I reacted to an accusation without evidence and used force.”
Serena lowered her eyes.
“I will accept whatever internal review follows.”
Preston's trap nearly worked.
But Brooks refused to hide his part.
That weakened the leverage.
Then one director asked,
“What about the Vale ownership claim?”
Brooks answered,
“We will release all historical documents after independent review.”
Eleanor gasped.
Arthur's forgery.
Daniel's blackmail.
Malcolm's theft.
Brooks meant all.
Mason called him immediately after.
“You'll destroy Arthur.”
Brooks said,
“No.”
“You'll destroy the Caldwell name.”
“Maybe.”
“Then why?”
Brooks looked toward Serena.
Edwin.
Vivian.
All the damage created by hiding.
“Because I'm tired of inheriting lies.”
Mason whispered,
“Then you should know one more.”
Brooks closed his eyes.
“Go ahead.”
“Arthur didn't die from his heart condition.”
Silence.
Brooks froze.
“What?”
Mason's voice dropped.
“Edwin found him.”
Brooks slowly turned toward Edwin.

The older man's face went pale.
And for the first time, Edwin looked as though there was one truth even he had hoped would stay buried.
