Chapter 8 - The CabinPolice were notified.

Brooks used company aviation to get a team north.

Serena insisted on going.

Brooks didn't want her beside him.

He also didn't trust her out of sight.

That truth hurt them both.

The cabin sat near Lake Arrowhead, not Northern California as Caleb had implied.

He had lied about location initially.

Smart.

Not smart enough.

Police arrived first.

Front door open.

No Caleb.

No Preston.

Inside:

Overturned chair.

Broken lamp.

Daniel Monroe's brown package.

Empty.

Brooks stared.

“Preston took everything.”

A detective shook his head.

“Maybe.”

There were two sets of footprints outside.

One leading toward the road.

One toward the woods.

No blood.

No obvious violence.

Then Serena found something under the kitchen table.

Cassette tape.

Label:

FOR SERENA AND CALEB

Preston had missed it.

They found an old player in Daniel's closet.

The tape crackled.

Daniel Monroe's voice.

Older.

Tired.

“If my children are hearing this, I failed to keep my sins from becoming yours.”

Serena sat.

Brooks remained standing.

Daniel confessed.

Malcolm Vale had recruited him to conceal unauthorized borrowing.

Daniel accepted $40,000.

Then Arthur discovered both the theft and Daniel's role.

Arthur threatened police.

Daniel panicked.

Blackmailed Arthur with the forged emergency authorization.

Arthur paid him $200,000 to leave.

But then Arthur did something unexpected.

He offered Daniel five percent of Caldwell Holdings.

Not hush money.

A conditional restitution arrangement.

Why?

Because Daniel had also prevented Malcolm from taking another six million dollars before the company collapsed.

Arthur believed Daniel's actions were mixed.

Corrupt and useful.

He created shares in Daniel's name held in escrow.

Daniel could claim them if he submitted a full confession to the board.

He never did.

Cowardice.

The shares remained dormant.

Daniel said,

“I kept telling myself I was protecting Serena and Caleb from scandal.”

Serena cried silently.

“In truth, I was protecting myself from their disappointment.”

Brooks understood that too well.

Daniel continued.

“Malcolm later told me Caleb was his son.”

Serena covered her mouth.

“Your mother admitted it before she died.”

Caleb's parentage was real.

“Malcolm wanted Caleb to inherit something from him.”

“Arthur agreed.”

Brooks froze.

Arthur knew.

“Arthur created a separate trust for Caleb.”

Serena stared.

Preston had never told him.

Daniel continued.

“Preston does not know this.”

Brooks leaned closer.

There.

Something Preston didn't know.

“The documents are not in Arthur's archive.”

“Where?” Serena whispered at the recording.

Daniel answered as if he heard.

“They are with Edwin Mercer.”

Everyone looked at each other.

Edwin.

Again.

Daniel continued.

“Arthur trusted Edwin because Edwin was the only man in that house who never asked what a secret was worth.”

Serena closed her eyes.

She had accused the one person holding proof that could protect her brother.

The tape continued.

“If Preston ever comes looking, do not give him the transfer documents.”

“Why?”

Serena whispered.

“Because Preston knows his father lost the shares lawfully.”

Silence.

Brooks stopped breathing.

Daniel continued.

“Preston found Malcolm's signed confession years ago.”

“He knows.”

Serena stared.

So revenge wasn't based on misunderstanding.

Preston knew the truth.

“He is using the old story because it makes theft feel righteous.”

Daniel coughed.

Then:

“He doesn't want justice.”

“He wants Caldwell Holdings.”

The tape ended.

Brooks turned toward Serena.

“Edwin can prove all of this.”

Her face collapsed.

“I tried to destroy him.”

“Yes.”

“I didn't know.”

Brooks laughed without humor.

“That's becoming a dangerous sentence.”

Serena looked away.

Police called.

They found Caleb.

Alive.

Three miles away.

He had run into the woods when Preston arrived.

Preston chased briefly, then returned to the cabin and took the package.

Caleb hid until officers found him.

He was shaken but unhurt.

Serena cried with relief.

Then Caleb asked one question.

“Did you find the tape?”

“Yes.”

“He knows about Edwin now.”

Brooks frowned.

“How?”

“Preston heard part of the recording before I grabbed the tape.”

Brooks's blood went cold.

Edwin was back at the Caldwell estate.

With Eleanor.

Brooks called.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Marcus answered instead.

“Mr. Caldwell?”

“Where's Edwin?”

Silence.

“Marcus.”

“He left twenty minutes ago.”

“With who?”

“I thought you knew.”

Brooks's heart pounded.

“Who?”

Marcus answered,

“Mrs. Caldwell.”

Brooks looked at Serena.

“No. Which Mrs. Caldwell?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Your mother.”

Eleanor had left with Edwin.

May you like

Without telling anyone.

And according to the estate gate camera, Preston's car had followed them out less than two minutes later.
