Chapter 23 - ONE STEPThe first step happened on a Tuesday.

No reporters.

No gala.

No dramatic music.

Dante almost missed it.

Rosalie stood between parallel bars.

Therapist beside her.

Dr. Chen watching.

Eli was at school in Connecticut.

Dante stood farther back now.

He had learned.

Rosalie shifted weight.

Right foot.

Left.

Her knees trembled.

The therapist said:

“Whenever you’re ready.”

Rosalie moved her right foot forward.

Two inches.

Then more.

Placed it down.

One step.

She stared.

Dante’s eyes filled.

Rosalie looked at him.

“Don’t.”

He covered his mouth.

“What?”

“Make it weird.”

“I’m not.”

“You’re crying.”

“I have allergies.”

Dr. Chen laughed.

Rosalie laughed.

Then Dante did too.

He walked closer only after she sat.

“That was…”

He stopped.

Hannah’s lesson.

Do not demand more.

Rosalie smiled.

“One step.”

“Yes.”

“That’s enough.”

Dante nodded.

“Yes.”

This time he meant it.

He called Eli afterward.

Rosalie told him.

Silence.

Then Eli screamed so loudly the phone distorted.

Rosalie pulled it away.

“Idiot.”

“You stepped!”

“Yes.”

“Do it again.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re not the boss.”

Dante said:

“Correct.”

Rosalie stared at him.

“Don’t get comfortable.”

Progress continued.

Slowly.

Some days one step.

Some none.

Then three.

Later ten with support.

Rosalie still used the wheelchair most of the day.

She began using forearm crutches for short supervised distances months later.

No miracle.

Work.

Fatigue.

Frustration.

Strength.

Joy.

One afternoon she fell safely onto a mat.

She screamed in anger.

“I hate this.”

Dante sat nearby.

“You can stop.”

She stared.

Old Dante would never have said that.

“What?”

“For today.”

She cried.

May you like

Then nodded.

Stopping became part of progress too.
