Chapter 19 - THE ONE PERSON DIANE COULD NO LONGER CONTROLRachel called 911 before leaving the coffee shop.

Michael was already at Emma's school.

Police pulled security footage.

A dark SUV.

Eric Dalton.

He had used documents listing him as a representative of the Holloway family trust.

The school should never have released Emma.

That argument could happen later.

Right now Rachel wanted her daughter.

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered immediately.

"Emma?"

Eric spoke.

"She's fine."

Rachel's vision blurred with rage.

"If you hurt her—"

"I'm not going to hurt a child."

"You took her."

"Because Diane refuses to answer me."

Rachel forced herself to stay calm.

"What do you want?"

"Money."

"How much?"

"Three million."

Rachel almost laughed.

"I don't have three million dollars."

"Diane does."

"Then call her."

"She won't answer."

Rachel suddenly understood.

Eric didn't understand what had happened.

Diane was with investigators.

Her phones had likely been seized.

"You want me to contact her."

"Exactly."

"Let me speak to Emma."

A pause.

Then Emma's voice.

"Mom?"

Rachel nearly collapsed.

"Baby, are you okay?"

"I'm scared."

"Did he hurt you?"

"No."

"Where are you?"

Eric took the phone back.

"Don't."

Rachel heard highway noise behind him.

"Eric, you're turning financial crimes into kidnapping."

"I need what I'm owed."

"You were paid to destroy Samantha."

"I did what Diane asked."

"And now you're taking a child because a sixty-five-year-old woman stopped paying you?"

Eric's voice hardened.

"Three million. One hour."

The call ended.

Police traced what they could.

Michael arrived.

Rachel had never seen terror like that on his face.

"This is my fault."

"Not now."

"If Mom hadn't—"

"Michael."

He stopped.

"Not now."

They needed action, not guilt.

Investigators contacted Diane.

She was brought into a secure interview room and allowed a monitored call.

Rachel heard her voice.

"What happened?"

"Eric has Emma."

Silence.

Then Diane whispered, "No."

For the first time, Rachel heard pure fear in her.

"He wants three million dollars."

Diane immediately said, "I'll pay."

Rachel froze.

Michael did too.

No bargaining.

No lecture.

No concern about reputation.

"I'll pay whatever he wants."

An investigator explained that payment would be controlled.

Diane interrupted.

"There's an account Eric knows about. Cayman holding account. He'll believe I still control it."

Michael stared.

"You hid another account?"

Rachel squeezed his arm.

Not now.

Diane continued giving instructions.

For the next forty minutes, police coordinated.

Eric sent an address.

An abandoned commercial property outside Chicago.

He wanted proof of transfer.

Police prepared.

Rachel was told to stay away.

She hated every second.

Then Diane asked to speak privately to Michael.

He refused.

"Anything you say, Rachel hears."

Diane paused.

Then:

"Michael, I need you to know something."

"What?"

"If Eric hurts Emma—"

"Don't."

"I never wanted this."

Michael laughed bitterly.

"You spent decades creating people like Eric because you thought consequences could be outsourced."

Diane began crying.

Rachel had never heard it before.

"I know."

Michael went silent.

Diane continued.

"I thought money made us safe."

Rachel looked at him.

"It made everyone around me dangerous."

For once, Diane wasn't defending herself.

Police successfully transferred a controlled amount into an account Eric could see.

He called.

"Good."

Rachel demanded Emma.

"She's walking out now."

Security footage from a police drone confirmed the door opening.

Emma appeared.

Alone.

Officers moved.

Rachel stopped breathing.

Then chaos.

Police vehicles surged forward.

Eric tried to flee through the rear of the building.

He was arrested less than two minutes later.

Rachel didn't care.

Emma was running toward an officer.

Alive.

Safe.

Forty minutes later, Rachel held her daughter so tightly Emma complained she couldn't breathe.

Rachel loosened her arms.

"Sorry."

Emma cried against her.

Michael knelt beside them.

Emma reached for him.

"Dad."

Michael broke.

He wrapped both of them in his arms.

For a moment, Rachel allowed it.

Not because the marriage was repaired.

Because their daughter needed both parents.

Emma eventually asked, "Where's Grandma?"

Michael and Rachel looked at each other.

Michael answered.

"She's somewhere she has to answer questions."

"Is she bad?"

Rachel thought carefully.

"Grandma made bad choices."

Emma frowned.

"A lot?"

Rachel almost laughed through tears.

"Yes."

Emma leaned against her.

"Can people stop?"

Michael looked down.

Rachel answered.

"Sometimes."

"How?"

"By telling the truth and accepting what happens afterward."

Michael looked at Rachel.

He understood the answer wasn't meant only for Emma.

Hours later, Diane was formally charged in connection with financial fraud and the scheme involving Samantha.

More charges were expected.

Michael didn't rush to arrange bail.

He didn't call attorneys to make everything disappear.

When Diane called him, he listened.

Then said only:

"Tell them everything."

Rachel watched from across the room.

When he hung up, Michael looked at her.

"It's over."

Rachel shook her head.

"No."

He frowned.

"Diane controlling everyone may be over."

Rachel looked toward Emma.

"But now we have to live with what all of you did while she was in control."

Michael nodded.

He didn't argue.

For the first time, that gave Rachel hope.

May you like

Not necessarily for their marriage.

But for whatever family came next.
