Chapter 15 - SHE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO DISAPPEARBeatrice Alder’s recorded statement began without apology.

“I believed Catherine was unstable.”
Lacey read transcript.
That first sentence made her furious.
Beatrice continued:
“She had frightened everyone.”
“She was not sleeping.”
“She said she feared hurting child.”
“Jonathan refused see seriousness.”
“I believed Lucy needed separation.”
Detective:
“Why not court?”
“Because Catherine would leave treatment.”
“She would create public scandal.”
“Jonathan might reverse.”
Control.

She expected Catherine to stabilize.
Then hoped Jonathan would agree extended guardianship.
She told herself Lucy safe.
At Maple Glen, Rebecca Whitcomb accepted under letter signed by Beatrice and Harold representing family authorization.
Not legally sufficient, but trusted.
Day after placement Catherine left treatment and called police.
Beatrice panicked.
If she returned Lucy, she would admit unauthorized removal during active investigation.
Harold warned potential kidnapping charges, custody catastrophe, family scandal.
Beatrice said:
“I made worst decision.”
“I waited.”
Waited.
Three days.
A week.
Then longer.
Jonathan started questioning.
Police interviews.
Catherine accused.
Beatrice doubled down.
She claimed not know.
Harold suggested moving child from Maple Glen because staff now aware missing case.
St. Brigid director Miriam Vale agreed to temporary confidential foster placement under false abandonment story.
Then Norwoods chosen.
Beatrice initially planned retrieve later after “situation cooled.”
But adoption process accelerated using forged relinquishment.
Harold told her reversal increasingly risky.
She allowed.
Detective:
“You allowed granddaughter adopted by strangers?”
Beatrice:
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Long pause.
“Because by then returning her would destroy Jonathan.”
Detective:
“Or you.”
Beatrice:
“Both.”
There.
Not love pure.
Self-preservation.
She followed Lacey from distance through Harold reports for years.
School.
Health.
Adoption stable.
She paid Harold to monitor.
She knew Ruth and Daniel good parents.
That became justification.
“She was safe.”
Lacey slammed transcript.
Safe is not same as rightful.
Beatrice knew Catherine searching.
Jonathan searching.
Why not anonymous tip?
“Because they would trace.”
Again self.
Then school incident.
Helena found Lacey independently.
Harold panicked.
He contacted Norwoods urging silence.
Beatrice ordered no further monitoring because risk.
So after eight, she lost track partly.
Later knew general through public records?
Enough.
Lacey called Catherine.
“I read.”
“So did I.”
“I hate her.”
Catherine was quiet.
“I do too.”
Lacey appreciated no moral lecture.
Then:
“I also hate that she may have believed protecting.”
“Yes.”
“It makes worse.”
“Sometimes.”
“If pure evil, easy.”
“Yes.”
Catherine had decades.
“Do you want meet?”
“Not yet.”
Beatrice asked through lawyer for chance apologize.

“What happened?”
“She said sorry.”
“I said not enough.”
“She said she was afraid.”
“I said so was I.”
“She asked forgiveness.”

“Then left.”
“Do you regret?”
“No.”
“Will you ever forgive?”
“I don’t know.”
“I don’t need decide.”
Good.
Legal consequences uncertain due age and evidence.
Prosecutors considered charges for historical kidnapping/conspiracy/false records, but Harold dead, Miriam dead, Beatrice aged. Still serious.
Beatrice’s cooperation and health could affect.
Lacey told prosecutor:
“Do not make charging decision based on what you think I need emotionally.”
They appreciated.
She wanted truth.
Not control prosecution.
The revelation also complicated Catherine’s story of disappearance.
Beatrice began with wrongful but possibly sincere protective impulse.
Then chose criminal concealment.
This nuance did not soften consequences.
It explained escalation.
Lacey wrote:
People can do unforgivable things while believing first step is reasonable.
She underlined.
Then thought of Ruth.
Different scale.
Same mechanism.
Fear.
Delay.
Another delay.
Years.
That recognition unsettled.
She was surrounded by adults who loved and lied.
May you like
The question was not who loved.
