Chapter 3 — The Missing Medication

# The Whisper Behind the Hospital Door

## Chapter 3 — The Missing Medication

Ryan barely slept that night.

He lay awake beside Vanessa, staring at the ceiling while replaying every moment from the hospital.

Her whisper.

His father's tears.

The frightened nurse.

The mysterious signature on the medication chart.

None of it made sense.

Whenever he glanced toward Vanessa, she appeared completely peaceful.

She slept soundly beside him, one hand resting gently on the blanket as though nothing unusual had happened.

Ryan wondered how long she had been living this double life.

Weeks?

Months?

Years?

He quietly slipped out of bed just before sunrise.

Instead of driving to his office...

He headed straight for Silver Oak Medical Center.

---

The hospital lobby was nearly empty.

Night-shift nurses exchanged reports with the morning staff while the smell of fresh coffee drifted from the cafeteria.

Ryan stopped at the reception desk.

"I'd like to review my father's treatment records."

The receptionist smiled politely.

"I'll call Medical Records."

Within minutes...

A middle-aged administrator escorted Ryan into a small consultation room.

Stacks of paperwork covered the table.

Electronic records filled the computer screen.

Ryan wasn't searching for a diagnosis.

He was searching for inconsistency.

The administrator explained each medication one by one.

Blood pressure medicine.

Blood thinner.

Pain management.

Stroke rehabilitation.

Everything appeared normal.

Until...

Ryan pointed at yesterday's chart.

"What's Lorazepam being used for?"

The administrator frowned.

"It shouldn't be."

Ryan looked up.

"What do you mean?"

She clicked through several files.

"According to Dr. Peterson's treatment plan..."

"Lorazepam was discontinued two days ago."

Ryan's stomach tightened.

"Then why was it administered yesterday?"

The administrator stared silently at the screen.

"It wasn't supposed to be."

---

A few minutes later...

Dr. Michael Peterson hurried into the room.

He looked confused.

"I was told there's a problem."

Ryan handed him the chart.

"Can you explain this signature?"

The doctor adjusted his glasses.

His expression immediately changed.

"This isn't mine."

He examined it more carefully.

"And it isn't any physician's signature."

Ryan asked quietly,

"So someone administered medication..."

"...without authorization?"

The doctor didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

He called the head nurse.

---

Fifteen minutes later...

The medication cart from George's floor was brought into the room.

Every vial was carefully counted.

Everything matched.

Except one.

A single bottle of Lorazepam.

According to inventory...

It should have contained twenty tablets.

Only eighteen remained.

Yet...

Hospital records showed none had been prescribed.

The room became silent.

Dr. Peterson slowly looked toward Ryan.

"Someone removed two tablets..."

"...without authorization."

---

Ryan's pulse quickened.

"Can you identify who accessed the medication cabinet?"

The head nurse nodded.

"Every nurse uses an electronic ID card."

She typed rapidly.

Then frowned.

"That's impossible."

"What?"

"The cabinet was opened yesterday..."

"...using my access card."

Dr. Peterson looked surprised.

"But you weren't working yesterday."

She slowly shook her head.

"No."

"I was home."

---

Someone had used her credentials.

---

Ryan left the consultation room with more questions than answers.

As he walked toward his father's room...

He noticed the young nurse from yesterday.

Emily.

She stood alone beside a supply closet.

When she saw Ryan...

She immediately looked nervous.

He approached carefully.

"Emily."

She glanced down the hallway before answering.

"Mr. Bennett..."

"I shouldn't talk to you."

Ryan lowered his voice.

"Were you trying to tell me something yesterday?"

She hesitated.

"I..."

Footsteps echoed nearby.

Emily immediately stepped backward.

"I have to go."

Before leaving...

She quietly slipped something into Ryan's hand.

A folded sticky note.

Then she hurried away without looking back.

Ryan waited until she disappeared.

He unfolded the note.

Only one sentence had been written.

**Check the security cameras from 2:30 yesterday.**

Nothing else.

No signature.

---

Ryan immediately went downstairs to the hospital's security office.

After identifying himself...

The supervisor agreed to let him review footage from outside Room 417.

The video began playing.

2:20 p.m.

Vanessa entered the room carrying flowers.

2:27 p.m.

No one entered.

2:31 p.m.

Ryan arrived.

He stood outside the glass door.

Everything matched his memory.

Then...

Ryan noticed something strange.

At 2:25...

Three minutes before he arrived...

A nurse pushed a medication cart toward George's room.

She stopped outside the door.

Looked around.

Then entered.

She remained inside for less than forty seconds.

When she left...

Her face couldn't be seen.

The surgical mask covered most of it.

The cap hid her hair.

Ryan paused the footage.

"Can you zoom in?"

The supervisor enlarged the image.

The face remained impossible to identify.

But something else became visible.

The nurse wasn't wearing a hospital ID badge.

Every nurse was required to wear one.

Except...

This woman wasn't.

Ryan felt a chill run through his body.

"Can we follow where she came from?"

The supervisor rewound the footage.

The mysterious nurse appeared from the hallway leading to the staff elevators.

They switched to another camera.

Nothing.

Another.

Nothing again.

She simply...

Appeared.

As though she had entered the hospital without passing any monitored entrance.

---

Ryan sat back in disbelief.

"Where did she go afterward?"

The supervisor followed the footage.

The nurse pushed the medication cart around a corner.

Then...

She disappeared again.

No camera ever captured her leaving the building.

The supervisor whispered,

"That's impossible."

Ryan wasn't so sure anymore.

---

Meanwhile...

Upstairs...

Vanessa arrived for her daily visit.

She smiled warmly at the nurses' station.

"How's George today?"

"Doing much better."

One nurse answered.

"He had an early visit from Ryan."

Vanessa's smile remained unchanged.

But inside...

Her heart skipped a beat.

"So early?"

"Yes."

"He spent almost two hours here."

Vanessa nodded casually.

"I must have just missed him."

She walked toward Room 417.

George saw her immediately.

His breathing became uneven.

Vanessa quietly closed the door.

Then looked directly at him.

"I know what you're trying to do."

George's eyes widened.

She leaned closer.

"So does Ryan."

The old man's fingers gripped the blanket.

Vanessa smiled.

"But he still doesn't know..."

"...who he's really fighting."

---

That evening...

Ryan returned home earlier than usual.

The house was quiet.

Vanessa was preparing dinner.

She greeted him with her usual smile.

"Long day?"

Ryan kissed her lightly on the forehead.

"The usual."

She searched his face carefully.

Trying to determine whether he knew more than he admitted.

He smiled naturally.

Pretended everything was normal.

Inside...

He had already made a decision.

He would tell no one.

Not yet.

Because whoever was helping Vanessa...

Was still inside the hospital.

And until he uncovered the entire truth...

His father was nowhere near safe.

As Ryan looked toward the family photographs hanging on the living room wall...

He failed to notice Vanessa quietly watching him from the kitchen.

Her smile slowly disappeared.

She reached into her purse.

Pulled out her phone.

And sent a single text message.

**He started asking questions.**

Less than ten seconds later...

A reply appeared.

**Then make sure he stops.**
