Chapter 5 — The Woman in the Photograph

# The Whisper Behind the Hospital Door

## Chapter 5 — The Woman in the Photograph

Ryan couldn't stop staring at the surveillance photographs.

The elegant silver-haired woman appeared again...

And again...

And again.

Different cafés.

Different parking lots.

Different dates.

Always with Vanessa.

Always alone.

Whatever secret connected them...

His father had believed it was important enough to hire private investigators.

Ryan slipped the investigation file into his briefcase before leaving the bank.

He had only one question now.

Who was she?

---

Instead of returning to the office...

Ryan drove directly to Harrison & Cole Investigations.

The small firm occupied the top floor of an old brick building overlooking downtown Portland.

Private investigator Thomas Harrison greeted him personally.

"I wasn't expecting to meet George Bennett's son."

Ryan placed the investigation file on the desk.

"My father hired you."

Thomas nodded.

"He did."

"I need to know everything."

The investigator hesitated.

"I'm afraid client confidentiality—"

"My father can no longer speak."

Thomas became quiet.

After several moments...

He slowly opened another file drawer.

"I suppose he'd want you to know."

---

Thomas spread dozens of additional photographs across the desk.

"There were never any affairs."

"There were never any financial crimes."

Ryan frowned.

"Then why was my father investigating Vanessa?"

Thomas slid one photograph forward.

"We weren't investigating Vanessa."

"We were investigating her."

He pointed at the older woman.

Ryan looked closely.

Elegant.

Confident.

Always impeccably dressed.

She looked familiar...

But he couldn't remember where he had seen her before.

"Who is she?"

Thomas answered quietly.

"Her name is Eleanor Whitmore."

Ryan searched his memory.

The name meant nothing.

Thomas continued.

"Officially..."

"She's a retired art dealer."

"But during our investigation..."

"We discovered she has used at least four different identities over the last twenty-five years."

Ryan's expression darkened.

"What kind of identities?"

Thomas handed him another document.

"None of them appear to be real."

---

Ryan slowly read the report.

Eleanor Whitmore.

Margaret Ellis.

Claire Donovan.

Susan Palmer.

Four different names.

Four different driver's licenses.

Four different histories.

None could be verified before twenty-two years ago.

Ryan looked up.

"You're telling me..."

"She appeared out of nowhere?"

Thomas nodded.

"Exactly."

---

Ryan's phone suddenly vibrated.

It was the hospital.

His heart skipped a beat.

"This is Ryan."

A nurse spoke hurriedly.

"Mr. Bennett..."

"Your father suffered another medical episode."

Ryan was already on his feet.

"Is he alive?"

"Yes."

"But Dr. Peterson wants you here immediately."

Ryan grabbed his briefcase.

"I'll be there in ten minutes."

---

When Ryan arrived at Silver Oak Medical Center...

Dr. Peterson met him outside George's room.

"Your father is stable."

Ryan let out a long breath.

"What happened?"

The doctor looked troubled.

"Someone disconnected his oxygen line."

Ryan froze.

"What?"

"It only lasted about thirty seconds."

"A nurse noticed the alarm immediately."

Ryan's face turned pale.

"Was it an accident?"

Dr. Peterson slowly shook his head.

"The connector didn't come loose."

"It was intentionally removed."

---

Ryan stared through the glass door.

George looked exhausted.

More fragile than ever.

Fear settled deep inside Ryan's chest.

Someone had just tried to kill his father.

Inside a hospital.

In broad daylight.

---

Hospital security reviewed every camera surrounding Room 417.

Once again...

They found nothing.

No unauthorized visitors.

No suspicious staff.

No explanation.

It was as if the person responsible had vanished into thin air.

Ryan remembered the fake nurse.

This wasn't over.

It had only become more dangerous.

---

Late that afternoon...

Ryan quietly entered George's room.

The old man opened his eyes.

Ryan sat beside him.

"I know someone tried to hurt you."

George closed his eyes.

A tear rolled slowly across his cheek.

Ryan gently held his father's hand.

"I also know about Eleanor Whitmore."

George's eyes flew open.

For the first time...

Real panic appeared on his face.

He struggled violently to lift his hand.

His fingers pointed desperately toward the bedside table.

Ryan quickly opened the drawer.

Nothing new.

George shook his head.

Again.

More urgently.

Ryan searched beneath the drawer.

Under the mattress.

Behind the cabinet.

Finally...

He noticed a tiny folded photograph taped beneath the bottom of the bedside table.

He carefully peeled it away.

The old photograph had faded with age.

It showed a much younger George.

Standing beside his late wife.

A little boy...

Ryan...

No older than six.

And standing beside them...

Smiling at the camera...

Was Eleanor Whitmore.

Ryan felt the blood drain from his face.

"No..."

He whispered.

"That's impossible."

George slowly closed his eyes.

As if confirming the truth.

Ryan turned the photograph over.

On the back...

Someone had written a date.

**July 14, 2003.**

Twenty-two years earlier.

Below the date...

Only four handwritten words.

**She was family once.**

Ryan stared at the sentence in disbelief.

If Eleanor had once been part of the Bennett family...

Then everything he believed about Vanessa...

About George...

About the inheritance...

Was only the beginning.

Outside the hospital...

A black luxury sedan remained parked across the street.

Inside...

Eleanor Whitmore lowered a pair of binoculars.

Vanessa sat beside her.

Nervously twisting her wedding ring.

Vanessa whispered,

"Did he find the photograph?"

Eleanor smiled calmly.

"Yes."

Vanessa looked frightened.

"Then he'll know who you are."

Eleanor's smile grew wider.

"No..."

"He'll only know..."

"...who I used to be."
