Chapter 10 - The File Laura Left With Ethan RossEthan Ross arrived carrying a red legal folder.

No dramatic box.

No secret key.

Just paper.

Sometimes the ugliest truths came in ordinary office supplies.

He was forty-one, tall, tired-eyed, and visibly uncomfortable inside Dominic’s mansion.

“Laura told me you might hate me.”

Dominic almost laughed.

“I’m developing a long list.”

“Fair.”

They sat with Ava and Morales.

Ethan placed the file on the table.

“I represented Laura privately for about six months.”

Dominic stared.

“Against who?”

“Not against you.”

“Then why hide it?”

“Because she didn’t want Gretchen knowing she had independent counsel.”

Arthur—Dominic—nodded.

“What did you do?”

Ethan reviewed trust documents.

Bank withdrawals.

Conrad’s accounting.

Gretchen’s access.

He advised Laura to report the financial activity.

“She was going to.”

“When?”

“After Toby was born.”

“Why wait?”

“She wanted to secure the trust amendments first.”

That made sense.

If she reported too early, Gretchen and Conrad might move faster.

“Then Laura got sick.”

“Yes.”

The word sat heavily.

“After she died?”

“I planned to contact you.”

“But?”

“Gretchen called me.”

Dominic went still.

“When?”

“Two days after the funeral.”

“What did she say?”

“That Laura had been mentally overwhelmed before death and that any legal instructions from her final months should be treated cautiously.”

Dominic’s jaw clenched.

Again.

Discredit the dead woman.

“Did you believe her?”

“No.”

“Then why didn’t you come?”

Ethan looked ashamed.

“Laura’s written instruction was specific. Contact Dominic only if Gretchen sought formal financial control or if either child appeared at risk.”

Dominic stared.

“Living in my house wasn’t enough?”

“Laura didn’t prohibit contact.”

“What did she say?”

Ethan opened the folder.

A signed instruction.

If I die unexpectedly, do not immediately turn this into a war around my children. Dominic will be grieving. Give him time. If Gretchen remains only a grandmother, watch. If she seeks money, custody, or control, act.

Dominic read it.

Laura had tried to protect him from legal chaos too.

The choice had been thoughtful.

But incomplete.

Nobody predicted Gretchen would simply become part of the household and manipulate from inside.

“What’s in the file?”

The original trust amendment removing Gretchen.

Original paternity report.

Bank tracing.

And a sworn declaration from Laura.

Dominic read.

She described Gretchen’s comments to Archer.

Attempts to challenge Toby’s paternity.

Unauthorized money use.

Then one paragraph stopped him.

I believe my mother is preparing to portray Dominic as an absent parent if I become unable to manage the children.

Dominic’s throat tightened.

Laura knew.

She wrote:

Dominic works too much. That is true. He also loves our children and has never neglected their safety. My mother treats his guilt as leverage.

He closed his eyes.

Then:

If I am gone, Archer may try to protect Dominic emotionally. He already does this. Please remind Dominic that an eight-year-old should not have to be the calm person in the room.

Archer had been seven when she wrote it.

Dominic almost broke.

Laura saw the pattern.

Archer hiding fears to protect Dad.

Carrying adult emotions.

Then came Toby.

My mother’s fixation on Toby is financial, but I fear it may become personal because she interprets his birth as a loss of status.

Dominic stared.

There it was.

A warning written before Toby could walk.

Before Gretchen ever raised a spoon at him.

“Why didn’t someone show me this?”

Ethan looked at him.

“Because Laura wanted you to have a chance to grieve without turning her mother into an enemy unless necessary.”

Dominic laughed bitterly.

“Well.”

No one answered.

Ethan opened the final section.

“There’s something you don’t know.”

Dominic almost wanted to leave.

Every sentence now seemed to contain another failure.

“What?”

“Laura discovered Conrad wasn’t acting only for Gretchen.”

Ava leaned forward.

“Who else?”

Ethan showed them an email chain.

Conrad communicating with an attorney.

Mitchell Sloan.

Gretchen’s younger brother.

Laura’s uncle.

Dominic vaguely knew him.

He lived in Arizona.

Never attended family events.

“What did he have to do with this?”

“Malcolm’s original trust gave Mitchell and Gretchen joint control of the charitable holding company.”

If Toby inherited the legacy shares, that holding company lost voting influence.

Both siblings lost power.

Dominic felt cold.

“So Gretchen wasn’t the only one who benefited from challenging Toby.”

“No.”

“Did Mitchell know about the withdrawals?”

Ethan pointed to emails.

“He appears to.”

One message from Mitchell to Conrad:

If Laura files the second-descendant confirmation, we lose the block permanently. Delay until after delivery.

Another:

Gretchen can manage Laura. Dominic is easier.

Dominic stared.

Easier.

Because he worked.

Because he trusted.

Because he wanted peace.

Mitchell had never needed to enter the mansion.

He controlled from distance.

“Where is he now?”

Morales checked.

“Scottsdale.”

“Has anyone contacted him?”

“Not yet.”

Then Ethan said:

“There’s one final thing.”

Dominic looked.

“Laura believed Mitchell was the one encouraging Gretchen to challenge Toby’s paternity.”

“Why?”

“Because the charitable holding company was failing.”

“How badly?”

“Very.”

Ava reviewed updated records.

The entity had taken risky loans.

Without the legacy share block, it faced insolvency.

Mitchell and Gretchen needed control.

Not just greed.

They were covering earlier financial decisions.

Dominic looked toward Toby’s playroom.

A baby had become an obstacle in a balance sheet before he was even born.

Then Morales’s phone rang.

She answered.

Listened.

Hung up.

“Mitchell Sloan just booked a flight.”

Dominic stood.

“Where?”

“Mexico City.”

“Today?”

“One hour.”

Ava looked at Morales.

“You think he knows?”

Morales nodded.

“Someone told him Conrad is cooperating.”

The circle widened.

Gretchen abused Toby.

But the motive beneath her hatred belonged to a family financial conspiracy that predated the child himself.

And now another adult was running.
