Chapter 6 - Harbor 417The six-digit code opened a private storage locker at Harbor Secure Archive in Santa Monica.

Dominic knew the company.
Laura used it years earlier to store foundation documents during an office renovation.
Locker 417 remained active.
Paid through an automatic trust account.
Dominic went with Ava and Detective Morales, who had officially taken over the criminal investigation involving Gretchen’s treatment of Toby and possible financial crimes.
The locker was small.
One shelf.
One banker’s box.
One fireproof document pouch.
Dominic stared.
Laura had prepared for discovery.
Not death necessarily.
Discovery.
That distinction mattered.
Inside the banker’s box were copies of the trust.
The paternity report.
Bank statements.
Photographs.
And a black flash drive.
Dominic’s hands shook.
A note sat on top.
If Mom is looking for this, do not let her convince you she is protecting Archer.
Dominic closed his eyes.
Laura knew.
Not everything.
Enough.
Morales photographed the letter before Dominic continued.
Laura wrote:
Gretchen believes what belonged to Dad should have remained under her control after he died.
Dad disagreed.
So did I.
Dominic knew Malcolm Sloan had never fully trusted Gretchen with money despite their thirty-year marriage.
He had assumed marital friction.
Maybe it was more.
Laura continued.
I found withdrawals from Archer’s account that I did not authorize.
Mom says they were reimbursements for family expenses.
They were not.
Ava looked at Morales.
“That’s strong.”
Then:
When I became pregnant with Toby, Mom became obsessed with the old descendant clause.
She told me Dominic might not be the father.
Dominic’s jaw clenched.
Laura continued:
There has never been any reason to doubt Dominic. I ordered the test because Mom told me she would challenge Toby’s status after birth if I moved the legacy shares away from the charitable holding company.
Dominic felt equal parts love and anger.
Love because Laura protected Toby.
Anger because Gretchen forced her own daughter to prove something that never needed proving.
Then:
The result is attached.
Dominic is Toby’s father.
If Mom says otherwise, she is lying.
Dominic looked toward the lab report.
There was no ambiguity.
Then came the part that connected Archer.
Mom also told me she could petition for control over Archer’s educational account if she proved Dominic was “financially distracted” and I was medically unavailable.
Dominic stared.
“How?”
Ava kept reading over his shoulder.
“She was setting up a guardianship theory.”
Laura had documented conversations.
Gretchen repeatedly described Dominic as absent.
Overworked.
Emotionally unavailable.
She suggested Laura’s pregnancy complications made her incapable of managing finances.
Individually, each statement seemed like family concern.
Together, they created a narrative.
Parents unstable.
Grandmother reliable.
Money safer under her control.
Dominic felt sick.
The flash drive contained spreadsheets.
Withdrawals from Archer’s account.
$84,000 became $213,000.
Payments went to companies connected to Gretchen.
Interior consulting.
Advisory fees.
Travel.
None approved by Laura.
Then another file.
Audio.
Laura speaking with Gretchen.
Dominic pressed play.
Gretchen’s voice:
“You’re making this bigger than it is.”
Laura:
“You took Archer’s money.”
“I managed family expenses.”
“You bought yourself a car.”
Silence.
Dominic’s pulse jumped.
Laura continued:
“You are not touching Toby’s trust.”
Gretchen laughed coldly.
“You don’t even know if Dominic is his father.”
Dominic gripped the table.
Laura answered immediately.
“Yes, I do.”
“Then prove it.”
“I already did.”
Silence.
Gretchen’s voice changed.
“You tested?”
“Yes.”
“You’re unbelievable.”
“No. You’re predictable.”
Dominic almost smiled through tears.
That was Laura.
Then Gretchen said:
“If you file this amendment, you’ll regret it.”
Laura:
“Is that a threat?”
“I’m your mother.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
The recording ended.
Morales remained still.
“Do you know who helped Gretchen process the withdrawals?”
Dominic shook his head.
Ava found another spreadsheet.
Authorizing professional:
Conrad Bell.
Dominic knew the name.
Malcolm Sloan’s longtime accountant.
After Malcolm died, Conrad helped Laura reorganize the family holdings.
He also prepared the annual statements Dominic received.
Dominic felt another layer break.
“Conrad?”
Ava nodded.
“Looks like it.”
Then Morales opened the fireproof pouch.
Inside was a photocopy of an email.
From Conrad to Gretchen.
Once Laura signs the postpartum incapacity acknowledgment, we can restore temporary family control.
Dominic stopped breathing.
“Postpartum incapacity?”
Laura had never signed anything like that.
Ava read further.
There was a draft document.
It claimed Laura voluntarily delegated trust authority to Gretchen for six months after Toby’s birth due to medical recovery.
Signature line blank.
But in the copy beneath—
Laura’s signature appeared.
Dominic stared.
“Did she sign?”
Ava looked carefully.
“I don’t know.”
Laura’s note answered.
Forgery.
Morales looked up.
“That changes the financial case significantly.”
Dominic barely heard her.
His eyes had moved to a final handwritten sentence.
If anything happens to me, Conrad will tell Mom they can still use Dominic.
He felt cold.
“Use me how?”
The flash drive contained one more file.
A video recorded three weeks before Toby was born.
Laura sat alone in the mansion study.
Tired.
Pregnant.
Determined.
“If you’re seeing this, Dominic, I need you to stop blaming yourself long enough to listen.”
His throat closed.
“You work too much. I complain too much. Neither of those things makes you a bad father.”
Dominic covered his mouth.
“But my mother knows you feel guilty about work.”
He looked at Ava.
“She will use that.”
Then Laura said:
“If she ever tells you Archer needs her more than he needs you, she is lying.”
Dominic’s eyes filled.
“If she ever tells you Toby is not yours, she is lying.”
A pause.
“And if she ever convinces you that keeping the peace means not asking questions…”
Laura looked directly into the camera.
“…that is when you need to ask the most.”
The video ended.
Dominic sat in silence.
Then Morales’s phone buzzed.
She read the message.
“Conrad Bell was informed this morning that investigators wanted to speak with him.”
Dominic looked up.
“And?”
“He emptied his office.”
“Where is he?”
“No one knows.”
Ava stared at the email.
Gretchen was abusive.
Greedy.
Manipulative.
But she had not built this alone.
Someone had been helping her move money.
Forge documents.
May you like
And plan for the possibility that Laura would become too sick to stop them.
Now Conrad had disappeared.
