September 12.
Staff instruction giving Marissa unofficial authority around the children.
September 18.
Game-room lock installed.
September 23.
Dining-room camera disabled.
September 23.
Nursery alerts muted.
October 2.
Marissa creates note describing Miles as “increasingly aggressive.”
October 13.
Miles pushes Marissa while protecting Lila.
The room became smaller with each date.
Graham stopped pretending.
“This proves administration.”
Vivian looked at him.
“Does it?”
“Yes.”
“You paid Marissa.”
“For reports.”
“You gave security access.”
“For reports.”
“You disabled a camera.”
“I didn’t personally.”
“You authorized access.”
“That is not the same thing.”
Marissa laughed bitterly.
“You told me to.”
Graham turned.
“Shut up.”
Vivian’s eyes moved between them.
Marissa stood.
“No. I’m done.”
Jonathan said:
“Sit down.”
“I’m not under arrest.”
“No.”
“Then I’m leaving.”
Vivian said one word.
“Fine.”
Marissa stopped.
She had expected resistance.
Vivian continued.
“But if you leave, Jonathan receives none of the protections you requested.”
Marissa turned slowly.
“How do you know about that?”
“Because Jonathan works for the Prescott family.”
Marissa’s face tightened.
Graham stared at her.
“What protections?”
She ignored him.
Vivian asked:
“What do you have?”
Marissa looked at Graham.
Then at Jonathan.
“Recordings.”
Graham stood.
“You recorded me?”
Marissa laughed.
“You think I trusted you?”
“You—”
Vivian’s voice cut through.
“Sit.”
Graham sat.
Marissa retrieved her phone.
Jonathan connected it to the tablet.
One recording played.
Graham’s voice:
Miles needs to look unstable, not dangerous. There’s a difference.
Marissa:
And if he reacts?
Graham:
Document it.
Another.
Marissa:
He keeps getting between me and Lila.
Graham:
Then stop making it easy for him to be the hero.
Another.
Marissa:
What does that mean?
Graham:
You’re smart. Figure it out.
Ethan’s face turned white with rage.
Miles stared at his uncle.
Graham looked at Vivian.
“I never told her to hurt anyone.”
Vivian’s answer was immediate.
“You created an incentive.”
Another recording.
Marissa:
He pushed me because I made him.
Graham:
Do not say that again.
Miles closed his eyes.
Caroline squeezed his hand.
Then Colin spoke.
“We also recovered one audio file from the old nursery monitor.”
Marissa’s face changed.
“What?”
Colin explained.
“The video was disabled. Cloud audio-event storage was not fully deleted.”
He pressed play.
Static.
Lila crying.
Then Marissa’s voice.
“Stop it.”
More crying.
Then:
“Nobody is coming every time you scream.”
Caroline covered her mouth.
Miles’s face went pale.
Another clip.
Miles:
“Leave her alone.”
Marissa:
“Stop making trouble.”
Miles:
“I’m telling Mom.”
Marissa laughed.
Then the sentence:
“No one will believe you.”
Miles stared at the table.
The room had lost its air.
Vivian looked at Marissa.
The housekeeper’s face was completely white.
Vivian did not raise her voice.
“You were correct about one thing.”
Marissa looked at her.
“Miles was a child.”
Vivian paused.
“And you expected that fact to protect you.”
She turned to Miles.
His eyes were wet.
Then Caroline looked at him.
Miles asked:
May you like
“Do you believe me now?”
Caroline broke.
