Chapter 10 - Eleven Notes Were a KeyThey did not give Graham anything.

Lena insisted.
June agreed.
Charlotte argued.
Mia listened.
Adults fighting over her mother's life as if there were a correct answer hidden between louder voices.
Finally Mia asked,
“What does the ending open?”
Silence.
Charlotte stopped talking.
Mia looked around.
“Everybody knows except me.”
Lena said,
“I don't.”
June looked uncomfortable.
Mia turned to her.
“You do.”
June sighed.
“Only part.”
Mia folded her arms.
“Tell me.”
June sat beside her.
“Julian created a digital archive.”
“What's that?”
“A collection of files.”
“On the card?”
“Probably.”
Charlotte interrupted.
“It is.”
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
“Julian didn't trust passwords written down. He created one from musical notes.”
Mia understood.
“The song.”
“The full fourteen-note phrase.”
“So the ending unlocks it.”
“Yes.”
Mia stared at Charlotte.
“You never knew the last three.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Julian stopped playing them around me.”
“When?”
Charlotte looked away.
“After he realized I was reporting things to Victor.”
Mia's stomach tightened.
The song itself had become a test of trust years before she was born.
June said,
“Anna knew the whole phrase.”
“So does Graham?”
Charlotte shook her head.
“No.”
“Victor?”
“No.”
“Then Mom taught it to me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Nobody answered.
Mia touched the guitar.
Anna's note had apologized for making a child carry adult crimes.
Maybe she taught Mia because music was safer than paper.
Children forgot passwords.
They remembered songs.
Mia asked,
“What is on the drive?”
Charlotte's face tightened.
“Evidence.”
“Of Julian's crash?”
“Yes.”
“What else?”
“Victor's financial crimes.”
“And you?”
Charlotte didn't answer.
Mia nodded.
“You.”
Charlotte looked at her.
“Probably.”
Mia stood.
“Then that's why you hugged me.”
Charlotte's face changed.
“What?”
“On the rooftop.”
Mia remembered warmth.
Arms around her.
Safety.
Then the whisper she hadn't heard.
She didn't know those words.
But she knew now there had been something false.
“You didn't want me.”
Charlotte stood.
“That isn't true.”
“You wanted the ending.”
“I wanted both.”
Mia laughed bitterly.
“People keep saying two things can be true when one of them is bad.”
Charlotte flinched.
Lena's phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
Video file.
Everyone gathered.
Graham appeared.
No mask.
No attempt to hide his face.
Behind him, Anna sat in a chair.
Mia screamed,
“Mom!”
Anna looked thinner.
Bruised near one temple.
But awake.
Alive.
“Mia.”
The sound came through the recording.
Anna looked directly into the camera.
“Don't do what he says.”
Graham stepped into frame.
“Midnight.”
He held up a laptop.
“Charlotte brings the girl and guitar.”
Lena cursed.
“Location?”
Graham continued.
“You'll receive it at eleven-thirty.”
Anna shouted,
“MIA, THE ENDING ISN'T—”
Graham stopped the recording.
Mia stared.
“The ending isn't what?”
Charlotte's face sharpened.
June whispered,
“Maybe she changed it.”
Mia thought.
Anna had taught her three final notes.
Always the same.
Or had she?
Memory.
Sometimes Anna played one ending at bedtime.
Sometimes another when they were moving between cities.
Mia had assumed she was improvising.
Maybe she wasn't.
Two endings.
One real.
One false.
Mia closed her eyes.
She hummed the eleven notes.
Then three more.
Charlotte leaned closer involuntarily.
Mia stopped before sounding them.
Charlotte realized what she'd almost done.
Mia looked at her.
“See?”
Charlotte stepped back.
Lena said,
“We're not trading a child.”
Mia ignored her.
She looked at the video timestamp.
Anna alive less than ten minutes ago.
“I have to go.”
“No,” June said.
“Mom came back for me every time.”
“Mia—”
“She left me because she thought they were following us.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“She didn't abandon me.”
Nobody spoke.
Mia continued.
“I won't abandon her.”
Charlotte crouched.
“There may be a way.”
Lena glared.
“No.”
Charlotte ignored her.
“Graham thinks I still need the real ending.”
“You do.”
“Yes.”
“So?”
Charlotte looked at Mia.
“We give him the wrong one.”
Mia stared.
“And when it doesn't open?”
Charlotte's expression hardened.
“That's when Graham learns Anna didn't hide all her plans from me.”
Lena's eyes narrowed.
“What are you talking about?”
Charlotte reached into her purse.
Removed an old brass key.
Mia recognized the symbol engraved on it.
A bird.
Charlotte whispered,
May you like
“Julian left two archives.”
And suddenly the tiny memory card inside Mia's sock might not be the most dangerous thing Anna had hidden.
