Chapter 18 - The Last Three NotesThe archive contained a laptop-sized encrypted drive.

No network connection.
No remote access.
Good.
Charlotte couldn't alter it after police recovered it.
But she could have tampered beforehand.
Digital forensic specialists made copies before opening anything.
The password prompt displayed fourteen blank positions.
Musical notes.
Anna looked at Mia.
“The real melody.”
Mia held the guitar.
Charlotte sat behind glass in another room.
Victor sat elsewhere.
Graham remained missing.
Lena said,
“No one enters anything until forensics approves.”
Hours passed.
Mia hated waiting.
At 8:17 p.m., technicians confirmed the drive was safe to unlock.
Mia played.
First eleven notes.
Familiar.
Then the final three.
The version Anna taught her after her seventh birthday.
The system opened.
Folders appeared.
STERLING ROYALTIES.
VICTOR.
GRAHAM.
CHARLOTTE.
JULIAN — FINAL.
Mia stared at her father's name.
Lena opened Charlotte first.
Video.
Blue Room.
Julian standing beside the piano.
Charlotte across from him.
Julian:
“You moved twenty-three million dollars.”
Charlotte:
“Victor told me the contracts were legal.”
Julian:
“You knew they weren't.”
Charlotte:
“I knew after.”
“Then why didn't you stop?”
Charlotte cried.
“Because I'd go to prison.”
Julian laughed bitterly.
“So instead artists lose everything.”
Charlotte:
“You don't understand.”
Julian:
“I understand perfectly.”
He stepped closer.
“You keep calling fear loyalty.”
Mia looked at Anna.
That phrase.
The same lesson Mia had been learning through everyone.
Video-Charlotte said,
“If you go to federal investigators, Victor will destroy Anna.”
Julian:
“Then help us.”
Charlotte:
“I can't.”
“Won't.”
Silence.
Then Charlotte said the sentence she had hidden for eight years.
“If Anna disappears, you come home.”
Mia's skin went cold.
Julian stared.
“You're threatening the woman I love.”
“No.”
“You are.”
“I would never hurt her.”
“You don't have to. You tell Victor where she is and tell yourself you didn't know what he'd do.”
Charlotte slapped him.
Julian looked at her.
Not angry.
Sad.
“Don't become him.”
The same words from the crash recording.
The video ended.
Mia wiped tears.
Next folder.
VICTOR.
Financial crimes.
Extortion.
Royalty theft.
Fraud.
Enough to destroy Sterling Media's leadership.
GRAHAM.
Emails about Julian's vehicle.
Parts orders.
Payments to a mechanic.
Direct evidence.
Graham had sabotaged the brakes.
Then JULIAN — FINAL.
Julian sat alone.
Camera pointed toward him.
“If you're watching this, something went wrong.”
Mia's breath caught.
He looked younger than every photograph.
Alive.
“Anna.”
He smiled.
“I know you'll blame yourself.”
Anna began crying.
“Don't.”
Julian continued.
“And if Mia exists…”
Mia stopped breathing.
He knew.
“Anna thinks it's too early to choose a name.”
He laughed.
“I disagree.”
Anna covered her face.
Julian leaned closer.
“If we get our girl, tell her the song is not a secret because secrets are special.”
Mia listened.
“It's a secret because some people turn beautiful things into tools.”
He picked up the old guitar.
Her guitar.
Played eleven notes.
Then stopped.
“The ending belongs only to people we trust.”
Mia cried silently.
Julian continued.
“If Charlotte is watching…”
Everyone turned toward the glass.
Charlotte's face drained.
Julian said,
“I hope you chose differently.”
Silence.
Then—
“You were my sister before you were Victor's daughter.”
Charlotte shut her eyes.
The video continued.
“And if you didn't choose differently, Anna has everything she needs to stop you.”
File ended.
Lena exhaled.
Case.
Complete.
Then a technician opened one more folder.
UNKNOWN.
Recent file.
Added three days ago.
Not Julian.
Someone had inserted it after Charlotte moved the archive.
Video opened.
Graham Reed.
Alive.
Smiling.
“If you're watching this, Charlotte failed.”
Lena stood.
Graham continued.
“You have the evidence.”
He shrugged.
“Congratulations.”
Then his smile changed.
“But evidence isn't the only thing Victor Sterling spent eight years hiding.”
Anna went pale.
Graham held up a birth certificate.
Mia's name.
Mia stared.
“What?”
Anna stood.
“No.”
Graham continued.
“Mia is Julian Sterling's daughter.”
Pause.
“But Anna Mercer is not her biological mother.”
Mia stopped breathing.
The room disappeared around her.
May you like
She looked at Anna.
Her mother had gone completely white.
