Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT SARAH LOST HER SONSarah had avoided retelling.

Now Leo’s therapist asked her to record account for future, when child older.
She agreed.
The night began with rain.
Sarah had returned from hospital two days earlier.
Walking slowly.
Medication making tired, not incoherent.
Leo was four.
He crawled into bed beside her.
“Mommy broken?”
She laughed.
“A little.”
Arthur away with father.
Victoria staying guest room to help.
At 7:30 p.m. two child welfare workers arrived with local officer.
Temporary report.
They said concerns had been raised about medication and home safety.
Sarah panicked.
Victoria told:
“Just cooperate.”
Leo cried.
Sarah kept calm.
Worker interviewed.
House fine.
Medication counted.
No immediate removal ordered that night.
This is important.
But next morning Julian came with “court papers.”
Sarah read through pain/fear.
Temporary custody to Arthur.
No unsupervised contact.
Must complete evaluation.
Not fully fake? There was real temporary schedule, altered.
Victoria packed Leo’s bag.
Sarah:
“He stays with Arthur?”
Victoria:
“Yes.”
“Only few days.”
Sarah hugged Leo.
“Mommy isn’t leaving.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
She kissed.
Victoria drove Leo to Arthur’s sister? Arthur was still away; maybe Leo stayed with Evelyn until Arthur returned.
Then fake progression.
Julian told Sarah not approach.
Arthur returned and was told Sarah voluntarily entered treatment and didn’t want Leo to see.
Sarah was told Arthur demanded distance.
Each day separation deepened.
Sarah completed tests.
Passed.
Julian said judge still concerned.
Arthur waited for Sarah contact.
Victoria said Sarah refused.
Weeks.
Then six hundred settlement.
Sarah never saw.
At one point Sarah went mansion gate.
Security had instruction:
No Sarah Whitmore.
She showed order.
Guard:
“Ma’am, you cannot be here.”
She left.
Arthur inside office? On travel maybe. Another time at house but Victoria told him “unstable woman attempted breach,” not naming? That's too much. Let's say she came when Arthur away.
Sarah’s lowest point:
Leo’s fifth birthday.
She drove near school.
Saw him from distance with Arthur.
Victoria beside.
Leo held balloon.
Sarah almost crossed.
Fake order in purse.
Fear stopped.
She cried in car.
Greyson photographed.
Victoria received.
No action.
That image later entered evidence.
Arthur saw.
He had been twenty yards away.
He stared photo.
Sarah in car across street.
He and Leo outside school.
“How close?”
Daniel:
“Same block.”
Arthur left room.
He vomited.
Four years abstract became twenty yards.
Sarah had been there.
He did not know.
Then Sarah told night she nearly gave up.
Year two.
Legal aid said no matching order.
She began suspecting fraud.
She called Arthur’s office directly.
Executive assistant routed to Victoria because “family matters.”
Sarah:
“I need Arthur.”
Victoria came line.
“Leave them alone.”
Sarah:
“I know paper fake.”
Victoria:
“You’re confused.”
“I’m going public.”
Victoria:
“Then Arthur will use every medical record and you’ll never see Leo.”
Sarah:
“He hates me?”
Victoria:
“He thinks you took money.”
Sarah shocked.
“What money?”
Victoria hung up.
That was first clue.
Sarah tried again.
Number blocked.
She wrote letter explaining.
It ended in box.
Had Arthur read, conspiracy collapsed.
Victoria kept.
The night Sarah lost son was not one night.
It lasted years.
Each missed opportunity another loss.
Arthur asked:
“Why didn’t you break rules?”
Sarah looked.
“I was afraid.”
“Of jail.”
“Of proving them right.”
“Of making scene in front of Leo.”
“Of your power.”
Arthur took.
His wealth itself silenced even without action.
Sarah thought impossible to fight billionaire-ish family? We hadn't said billionaire, just wealthy. Still.
Then Arthur told his side:
He returned home.
Victoria said Sarah chose treatment and needed distance.
He called Julian.
Julian said:
“Client requests no direct communication.”
Arthur respected.
Later received settlement demand.
He grew angry.
Signed transfer.
Started divorce formal.
Sarah never participated directly because forged representation.
Default divorce? Could be problematic legally. Let's say their legal separation/divorce eventually proceeded based on service through Julian who falsely accepted on Sarah's behalf; later court would revisit fraud. But Arthur later married Victoria, requiring divorce final. Yes, divorce can be vacated potentially but he remarried. We need handle. Julian filed appearances and signed settlement as counsel; forged client authorization. Court relied. Divorce decree real, procured by fraud.
Sarah thought divorce inevitable and Julian said signed on her behalf under authorization? She never gave. She received final decree after. Too exhausted/poor to challenge.
Arthur legally divorced, later married Victoria.
Now fraud could complicate but marriage likely valid under facial decree. Lawyers sort.
Sarah:
“You remarried.”
“Yes.”
“Did you love her?”
Arthur paused.
“Yes.”
Sarah looked down.
Truth.
Conspiracy didn’t make every feeling fake.
Victoria comforted Arthur through pain she helped create.
That was twisted.
Arthur:
“I don’t know what was real.”
Sarah:
“Leo is.”
Focus.
Then Leo asked Sarah one evening:
“What did you say when I left?”
Sarah answered:
“Mommy isn’t leaving.”
He remembered.
Tears.
“I thought dream.”
“No.”
“You promised.”
“I did.”
“Did you break?”
Sarah swallowed.
“I couldn’t get to you.”
“But I never chose away.”
Leo leaned.
“Okay.”
Not perfect absolution.
But memory restored.
The night Sarah lost son had been rewritten by Victoria.

Now Sarah gave Leo original version.
And this time no one interrupted.
