Chapter 22 - VICTORIA BLAMES JULIANWhen pressure peaked, Victoria’s first full defense:

“Julian did it.”
He forged.
He moved money.
He gave legal advice.
He told block letters.
He exaggerated medical records.
Some true.
But emails.
Julian responded:
“Victoria directed.”
Mutual destruction.
Prosecutors loved documents more than accusations.
Email:
Victoria:
Sarah cannot get direct line to Arthur.
Julian:
Understood.
Another:
Julian:
I need explicit confirmation before revised document.
Victoria:
Proceed.
Another:
Victoria:
Use the signature page I sent.
There.
No sole blame.
Julian’s notes:
V concerned Sarah may expose foundation and reclaim access to child.
Julian was architect/legal technician.
Victoria client/master beneficiary.
Both.
Victoria later shifted:
“I was manipulated by Julian.”
Sarah laughed:
“Everyone unstable/manipulated except her.”
Arthur:
“Pattern.”
But fairness:
Julian was experienced lawyer, Victoria trusted.
He may have normalized.
Still she knew letters.
Surveillance.
money.
lies.
Years.
Cannot outsource conscience.
At sentencing preparation Victoria finally stopped total blame.
Her therapist/attorney encouraged genuine accountability because judge sees.
She said:
“Julian helped me do what I already wanted.”
That mattered.
Julian meanwhile claimed greed.
He owed money? Could add gambling? User likes juicy but not needed. Maybe tax debt/business losses. Let's add: his firm had financial distress and he used scheme fees to cover.
Naomi found firm near bankruptcy.
Money motive.
He told himself Victoria wealthy, Sarah unstable, child safe, so “papering” outcome not harm.
Dangerous paternalism.
He received disbarment and prison shorter due cooperation/restitution.
Sarah watched news of disbarment.
No joy.
“I wanted him unable to do this again.”
Done.
Then Victoria’s finances.
Restitution required sell condo/investments.
Mansion? Arthur owned; she had marital settlement claim limited, but divorce settlement offset.
She moved from luxury.
Again Sarah:
“I don’t care if she has nice apartment.”
“Just don’t use my stolen money.”
Specific.
Leo eventually asked:
“Is Victoria poor now?”
“No.”
“She has less.”
“Because she stole?”
“Because courts ordered money returned and divorce changed finances.”
Good.
No class revenge.
Then Julian provided last major evidence:
audio from a meeting he recorded to protect himself.
Victoria:
“If Sarah ever gets in front of Arthur, this is over.”
Julian:
“Then don’t let her.”
Victoria:
“I can control mail and security.”
“I can’t control chance.”
Julian:
“Chance is unlikely.”
Four years later chance walked in as cleaner.
Sarah heard.
She almost smiled.
“Chance won.”
Arthur:
“Leo did.”
And Cooper? Different story. No dog. Leo.
The boy saw.
Then Sarah asked:
“Why record?”
Julian:
“Insurance.”
Everyone betrayed everyone.
Victoria kept letters as insurance/conscience.
Julian kept audio.
Greyson kept reports.
Sarah kept receipts.
Arthur kept transfer records.
Control systems created evidence.
Irony.
Victoria blamed Julian until she couldn’t.
Julian blamed Victoria.
The truth did not need choose single mastermind.
Conspiracy can have shared agency.
Each made choices.
Each profited.
Each knew enough.
Each could stop.
Neither did.
That nuance made consequences stronger, not weaker.
Then Sarah finalized civil settlement:
Compensation from Victoria/Julian assets and insurers where applicable.
Formal written acknowledgment no abandonment.
Legal fees.
Records correction.
She used part to return design profession and secure home near Leo school.
Not mansion.
Her choice.
Arthur offered matching? She refused.
Leo helped choose paint color.
Terrible green.
Sarah allowed one wall.
New life.
Not bought by Arthur.
Built from accountability.

Victoria and Julian had tried turn Sarah into woman who disappeared.
Their own documents made impossible.
