THE PARROT HEARD EVERYTHING / Chapter 18 / 25

Chapter 18 - THE FAMILY MEETINGEverett invited everyone back to the mansion.

Not twenty relatives.

Only the four of them.

Everett.

Lorraine.

Preston.

Celia.

Onyx on his perch.

No cake.

No champagne.

No flowers.

Cross attended only for the first ten minutes.

Everett laid out the facts.

No accusations beyond evidence.

Preston initiated fraudulent borrowing.

Lorraine arranged forged trust documents.

Preston knowingly used them.

Lorraine orchestrated a false incapacity process.

Lorraine tampered with medication.

Celia discovered major evidence and concealed it temporarily.

Preston and Celia’s marriage was breaking.

Everett himself had hidden important estate planning and built a family system where everyone expected him to solve crises privately.

Then Everett said:

“No more private fixes.”

Lorraine looked down.

Preston nodded.

Celia folded her hands.

Everett continued.

“If prosecutors ask questions, you answer.”

“Banks?”

“You answer.”

“Trust auditors?”

“You answer.”

“No one calls me to make it disappear.”

Preston looked at him.

“What if I go to prison?”

Everett’s face tightened.

“That will be determined by what you did, not by how much I love you.”

Preston began crying.

Everett did too.

That surprised everyone.

“I do love you.”

He looked at his son.

“That is why I’m done rescuing you from consequences.”

Preston nodded.

Lorraine stared.

“And me?”

Everett looked at his wife.

“I don’t know what our marriage is anymore.”

She flinched.

“I need time.”

“Will you divorce me?”

“I don’t know.”

Honesty.

No strategic answer.

Celia spoke next.

“I’m leaving Preston.”

Preston closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“I’m not taking the children from you.”

“They’re nearly adults.”

“I know.”

“But I’m done living inside financial emergencies.”

Preston nodded.

Again, no argument.

Celia looked at Everett.

“I should have told you the day I found the folder.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I believe you.”

Not forgiveness.

Recognition.

Then Onyx spoke.

“Almost ready?”

Everyone turned.

Silence.

Then the bird made Lorraine’s laugh.

Celia unexpectedly laughed.

Preston did too.

Even Everett.

Lorraine cried while laughing.

It was the strangest sound the room had held in months.

Then Onyx said:

“Who was it?”

Everett shook his head.

“No more.”

The bird tilted his head.

Everett looked at the family.

“The answer was all of us.”

Lorraine frowned.

Everett explained.

“Celia said the sentence.”

“Preston gave it meaning because he was guilty.”

“Lorraine gave it meaning because she was hiding the incapacity plan.”

“I assumed murder because I no longer trusted anyone.”

“Onyx did not uncover one killer.”

He tapped his cane lightly.

“He uncovered a family where everyone had something they were terrified I might learn.”

Nobody argued.

That was the most honest moment in the Holloway mansion in years.
