THE PARROT HEARD EVERYTHING / Chapter 23 / 25

Chapter 23 - LORRAINE COMES BACKLorraine returned to supervised community living after completing custody.

Not the mansion.

A smaller condo she already owned.

Everett did not meet her immediately.

Three months passed.

Then she sent a letter.

I am not asking to come home.

Good.

I am asking whether you would have coffee with me somewhere neither of us owns.

Everett almost smiled.

They met at a quiet hotel café.

Lorraine looked older.

Everett probably did too.

They sat.

No lawyers.

No Onyx.

She asked:

“How is he?”

“Preston?”

“Onyx.”

Everett laughed.

“Insufferable.”

Lorraine smiled.

Then silence.

She said:

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

She nodded.

“I do want to understand one thing.”

“What?”

“Why didn’t you divorce me immediately?”

Everett thought.

“Because anger makes permanent decisions feel simple.”

Lorraine looked down.

“And now?”

“I filed last month.”

Her face changed.

She had not been served yet.

Everett continued.

“I’m sorry you’re learning this here.”

Lorraine swallowed.

“No.”

She nodded slowly.

“I asked for honesty.”

“Yes.”

Tears filled her eyes.

Everett’s did too.

Thirty-eight years.

There was no version where ending it felt clean.

“I still love you,” Lorraine whispered.

“I know.”

“Do you love me?”

Everett waited.

“Yes.”

Her face crumpled.

“Then why?”

“Because trust is not a sentimental feeling.”

He looked directly at her.

“It is infrastructure.”

Lorraine listened.

“You broke it deliberately.”

“Repeatedly.”

“To make me appear incapable.”

“To access money.”

“To protect Preston.”

“To protect yourself.”

Everett shook his head.

“I can understand why you were afraid and still decide I cannot build a marriage on what remains.”

Lorraine cried quietly.

Then:

“Will you ever speak to me again?”

“Yes.”

That surprised her.

“We have a son.”

“Grandchildren.”

“History.”

“Divorce does not require pretending you died.”

Lorraine almost laughed.

Everett continued.

“But you will not control my finances.”

“My healthcare.”

“My medication.”

“My house.”

“My trust.”

She nodded.

Boundaries.

Not revenge.

They finished coffee.

When Lorraine stood, she touched Everett’s hand.

He allowed it for one second.

Then let go.

May you like

Not dramatic.

Enough.
