Chapter 12 - Evan Saw His Brother Through a Drone CameraEvan had imagined seeing Cole alive thousands of times.

He never imagined the first moment would be a grainy thermal-enhanced image on a command screen.
Cole bent beside a motorcycle.
Thin.
Bearded.
Moving.
Alive.
Evan touched the screen without thinking.
Lena stood beside him.
“That’s him?”
“Yes.”
“You’re sure?”
“I’d know that posture anywhere.”
Cole always leaned too far over the left side when checking chains.
Bad back.
Old injury.
Evan laughed once.
Then cried.
No one commented.
Drone view shifted.
Natalie appeared.
Blaire identified her immediately.
She was carrying boxes from one building to another.
No restraints.
But armed guards nearby.
Silas Rourke not visible.
Task force counted at least eleven adults.
Some suspects.
Some possible captives.
Complex entry.
Property near river.
Multiple exits.
Boats.
Motorcycles.
Levee roads.
Evan wanted to go.
Lena said no.
“You’re not tactical.”
“I’m police.”
“Motor officer.”
“I can support perimeter.”
“No.”
“Lena.”
“Silas wants you.”
“That’s why—”
“No.”
She looked directly at him.
“If Cole stayed inside knowing he was bait, the one thing he asked was that you stay out.”
Evan remembered Natalie’s book:
COLE WANTS EVAN CLOSE BUT NOT INSIDE.
He hated his brother’s judgment.
Also trusted it.
Evan took perimeter assignment two miles away.
Motor unit officers blocked potential escape route after entry signal.
Not heroic breach.
Traffic control.
Exactly his job.
At 4:18 a.m., teams moved.
First building cleared.
Three people detained.
Second.
Two captives.
Then gunfire.
Evan’s hands tightened.
Radio traffic remained controlled.
Officer okay.
Suspect wounded.
Medical moving.
Then:
Vehicle leaving east.
Dark touring motorcycle.
Evan saw headlight approaching levee road.
He started his police motorcycle.
Authorized intercept.
The rider accelerated.
Evan followed at safe tactical distance while another unit moved ahead.
No reckless chase.
Road narrow.
River beside it.
The rider looked back.
Silas?
Helmet hid face.
Then motorcycle slowed unexpectedly.
Stopped.
Rider raised hands.
Not Silas.
Cole.
Evan’s heart stopped.
His brother removed helmet.
Face bruised.
Eyes exhausted.
Alive.
Evan stopped thirty feet away.
Protocol first.
“Hands visible!”
Cole laughed weakly.
“Seriously?”
Evan’s voice broke.
“Hands.”
Cole raised them.
Officers approached.
Checked him.
No weapon.
Once cleared, Evan dismounted.
For several seconds the brothers stared.
Then Cole said:
“You got old.”
Evan crossed the distance and hugged him.
Hard.
Cole grunted.
“Ribs.”
Evan loosened.
“You idiot.”
“Good to see you too.”
“Why didn’t you leave?”
Cole looked toward the facility.
“Natalie.”
“Where is she?”
“Inside.”
“Silas?”
“Gone.”
Evan stepped back.
“What?”
“He left before raid.”
“How?”
“Boat.”
Radio immediately updated river units.
Cole continued:
“He knew.”
“How?”
“Mercer?”
“No.”
Evan frowned.
“Then who?”
Cole shook his head.
“Another leak.”
Evan felt cold.
Mercer was not the only protection.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Cole.”
“I don’t.”
His brother looked at him.
“But Silas knew Mercer was done.”
“How?”
“He told me yesterday.”
Evan stared.
“Then he has someone closer to task force.”
Cole nodded.
“Probably federal or county. I couldn’t figure it.”
The raid continued.
Natalie was recovered from third building.
Blaire was not allowed on scene but received confirmation.
Her sister alive.
Four years.
Alive.
Six other people rescued.
Several arrests.
Silas escaped by river.
Again.
Evan wanted to celebrate Cole.
Couldn’t yet.
Cole underwent medical examination.
Dehydration.
Healing rib fractures.
Old concussion.
Sedative exposure.
Nothing immediately life-threatening.
In hospital, Evan sat beside him.
“Tell me everything.”
Cole smiled.
“You always start small.”
“Why didn’t you call?”
“Because Silas tracked phones.”
“Police station?”
“He had Mercer.”
“You didn’t know that.”
“I suspected a cop.”
“You could have walked into FBI office.”
Cole looked down.
“I tried once.”
“What happened?”
“Route changed before I got there.”
“Why?”
“Someone knew.”
The second leak.
Cole continued:
“Natalie was documenting names.”
“I know.”
“We had seven people we could move.”
“Move where?”
“Out.”
“You helped escape?”
“Yes.”
“Why stay?”
Cole looked at him like answer obvious.
“Because Natalie couldn’t leave.”
“Why?”
“Silas had Blaire.”
Evan frowned.
“Blaire wasn’t captive.”
“Not physically.”
Cole explained.
Silas told Natalie that if she disappeared, Blaire died.
Told Blaire that if she defected, Natalie died.
Sisters controlling each other without contact.
Neither knew the other was still working to save them.
“Silas builds cages with people.”
Evan sat back.
Not locks.
Relationships.
Fear.
Then Cole whispered:
“He did the same with Mercer.”
“His daughter’s past.”
“Yes.”
“And Darren.”
Cole nodded.
“Silas never got over him.”
Evan asked:
“Why me?”
Cole looked at his brother.
“You were the symbol.”
“Of what?”
“Motor unit.”
The officers Silas blamed for Darren’s death.
“And you.”
Cole smiled faintly.
“The brother who wouldn’t stop.”
Evan looked away.
Cole continued:
“He wanted to make you disappear voluntarily.”
“Fake flight.”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
“Keep you alive.”
Evan stared.
“For what?”
“To force police information.”
His stomach tightened.
Silas wanted a new Mercer.
Not dead Evan.
Compromised Evan.
Cole said:
“He didn’t understand you.”
Evan almost laughed.
“You sound confident.”
“I told him if he kidnapped you, you’d be unbearable.”
“Accurate.”
Cole smiled.
Then became serious.
“The problem isn’t Silas now.”
“What?”
“He’s running.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
Cole shook his head.
“He’s cleaning.”
Evan felt cold.
May you like
“Cleaning what?”
“People who can identify the second cop.”
