Chapter 6 - The Date Cole Left Months EarlyCole could not have known August 23 by accident.

That became the working assumption.
Maybe a recurring shipment.
Maybe an event Rourke planned months ahead.
Maybe a transfer date.
Investigators searched logistics.
Vehicle theft.
Rental vans.
Storage contracts.
Known Rourke associates.
Nothing obvious.
Then Evan remembered motorcycle culture.
August 23 fell during a large regional touring rally near Reno.
Hundreds of motorcycles.
Hotels full.
Trailers.
Vans.
Riders crossing state lines.
Perfect cover.
Lena looked at the event schedule.
“Cole knew.”
“Rourke would use the rally.”
“For movement?”
“Yes.”
“People?”
“Maybe.”
Motorcycles provided camouflage.
A truck carrying two bikes and passengers looked normal near a rally.
A van following touring riders looked ordinary.
Blaire confirmed Rourke had mentioned Reno weeks earlier.
“He said it was harvest.”
“What does that mean?”
“I don’t know.”
“New victims?”
“Maybe bikes.”
Lena pressed.
“People?”
Blaire became pale.
“I don’t know.”
Federal task force established surveillance around known associates and rally entry points.
Evan was told to remain in Sacramento.
He argued.
Lost.
Captain Mercer said:
“You’re the exact person Rourke wants.”
“Then use that.”
“We’re not offering you as bait.”
“He already targeted me.”
“Which is why you stay here.”
Evan hated it.
At 4:40 p.m., a license plate reader near Truckee hit on a cargo van associated with a shell company linked to Silas Rourke.
Another camera caught two touring motorcycles riding ahead.
One BMW.
One Indian.
Neither plate returned valid.
Nevada officers followed at distance.
The van entered Reno.
Then vanished inside hotel traffic.
At 6:13, Blaire received an encrypted message on a device investigators were monitoring with legal authorization.
WHERE ARE YOU?
No sender name.
She typed under supervision:
DELAYED.
Response:
CROSS?
Blaire looked at Lena.
They answered:
HANDLED.
Thirty seconds.
Then:
BRING TOKEN.
“What token?” Lena asked.
Blaire’s face changed.
“The badge.”
Evan had been right.
They wanted his police identification.
Why?
Maybe proof he was captured.
Maybe access.
Maybe psychological revenge.
Blaire typed:
AT SAFE.
Response:
NO TOKEN NO ENTRY.
Then coordinates appeared.
Reno industrial district.
Task force moved.
Warehouse.
Locked.
Inside:
Motorcycles.
Parts.
Fake plates.
Documents.
No people.
But one wall displayed photographs.
Police officers.
Mostly motorcycle officers.
Some Sacramento.
Some Nevada.
Evan’s photograph appeared three times.
One from a public charity ride.
One outside police headquarters.
One taken from behind him at a gas station.
He stared when Lena sent the image.
They had watched him.
Another photograph showed Cole.
Bound to a chair.
Alive.
Date visible on whiteboard behind him:
AUG 20.
Three days ago.
Evan stopped breathing.
His brother was alive three days ago.
Lena called.
“We have proof.”
“Where is he?”
“Not there.”
“Anything?”
“A map.”
“What map?”
“Nevada.”
Several routes marked.
One destination circled.
An abandoned resort near Pyramid Lake.
Task force moved immediately.
This time Captain Mercer allowed Evan to travel to Reno but not participate in entry.
He arrived after midnight.
The resort had once served fishermen.
Now windows boarded.
Parking area empty.
Officers entered.
Found food.
Medical supplies.
Restraints.
Four frightened adults.
Two women.
Two men.
All missing persons.
Natalie Price was not among them.
Cole was not among them.
One rescued man recognized Cole’s photograph.
“He was here.”
Evan’s heart pounded.
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
“Where did they take him?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who?”
“Silas.”
“What happened?”
The man looked toward the floor.
“Cole tried to help us.”
“How?”
“He got a door open.”
“Then?”
“Silas caught him.”
Evan’s chest tightened.
“Was he hurt?”
“Yes.”
“How bad?”
“I don’t know.”
The man continued:
“They kept asking him about a police badge.”
“Mine?”
“I guess.”
“What for?”
“He told Silas his brother would never come alone.”
Evan almost smiled despite everything.
Cole still knew him.
“What did Silas say?”
The rescued man swallowed.
“He said that was the point.”
Evan frowned.
“What point?”
“He wanted police to follow.”
Silence.
Lena looked at Evan.
This whole trail might have been deliberately visible.
Cole’s breadcrumbs were real.
But Rourke had discovered them.
Maybe he was now using the trail to pull law enforcement where he wanted.
The rescued man added:
“Before they took Cole, Silas told him, ‘Your brother’s finally riding into the same trap Darren did.’”
Evan felt cold.
This was no longer simply criminal logistics.
Rourke had been building toward Evan.
Then officers found a message written beneath a loose floorboard.
Not Rourke’s.
Cole’s.
Scratched with something sharp.
DON’T FOLLOW THE BIKES.
Evan stared.
Below it:
FOLLOW THE WOMAN.
Which woman?
Blaire?
Natalie?
Someone else?
May you like
Then another line.
SHE’S THE ROUTE.
