THE SEVERED PONYTAIL / Chapter 24 / 25

Chapter 24 - AVA CHOSE HER OWN HAIRThe stylist came to the mansion on a quiet Saturday morning.

Her name was Nina.

She brought several pairs of scissors but kept them inside a closed case.

Ava met her in the sunroom rather than the entrance hall.

“Do I have to cut it today?” Ava asked.

“No,” Nina said.

“You can change your mind at any moment.”

“What if you already start?”

“We stop when you say stop.”

Ava looked at Mason.

He nodded.

Her decision.

Nina showed her several hairstyles.

They could trim the long left ponytail to match the shorter right side.

They could create a layered shoulder-length style.

They could leave everything untouched and wait.

Ava chose a shoulder-length cut.

“Both sides the same?”

“Yes.”

“Will you do one side at a time?”

“I will tell you before every cut.”

Ben waited nearby.

Ava asked him to stay.

Mason stood at the doorway.

Nina removed both white ribbons.

She gave them to Ava.

Then she combed the long left side.

“Ready?”

Ava inhaled.

“Yes.”

The scissors closed gently.

A small section fell onto the cape.

Ava flinched.

Nina stopped.

“Continue or wait?”

“Wait.”

They waited.

No one told her to be brave.

No one rushed.

Ava touched the shorter right side.

Then she looked in the mirror.

“Continue.”

Nina trimmed the hair carefully until both sides became even.

The final style rested at Ava’s shoulders.

The uneven right ponytail was gone—not erased, but transformed through Ava’s choice.

When Nina finished, she held up the mirror.

Ava stared.

“What do you think?” Mason asked.

Ava smiled slowly.

“It looks like me.”

Not Evelyn.

Not Clarissa’s victim.

Not evidence.

Ava.

She tied one white ribbon around her wrist.

She gave the other to Ben.

“You kept them even when the hair wasn’t even,” she said.

Ben tied his ribbon to the learning watch in his drawer.

Mason asked whether Ava wanted to save the new cut hair.

“No.”

“Throw it away?”

“Yes.”

The ordinary hair fell into an ordinary bin.

Nothing terrible followed.

After Nina left, Ava ran through the mansion.

Her shorter hair moved around her face.

She stopped before the grand entrance mirror.

For the first time since the attack, both sides matched because she had requested it.

Mason stood behind her.

“Do you miss the long hair?”

“A little.”

“It can grow again.”

“I know.”

That knowledge no longer sounded like adults minimizing harm.

It sounded like time.

Before bed, Ava placed the severed ponytail box on a high shelf.

Not hidden.

May you like

Not beside her pillow.

Far enough away that it no longer needed to be checked.
