Chapter 6 - BEN CUT HER HAIRClarissa held a press conference outside her attorney’s Manhattan office.

She wore a dark coat over the same burgundy sequined gown.
Her cheek showed a faint red mark from Mason’s slap.
“I was attacked in my own home,” she said.
Reporters asked whether Ben cut Ava’s hair.
Clarissa lowered her eyes.
“My stepson has struggled with anger since his mother’s death.”
The sentence reached Mason before police completed the investigation.
Clarissa turned a private child into a public suspect.
Mason’s attorneys advised him to issue a denial.
He refused to expose more details.
He released only one statement:
“Both children are safe. I accept responsibility for striking my wife. The allegation against my nine-year-old son is false and is being investigated through evidence.”
Commentators debated the case.
Some focused on Clarissa’s cut cheek.
Others focused on Ava’s hair.
A few called Ben violent without knowing him.
At school, another child showed Ben the report.
“Did you cut your sister?”
Ben pushed the phone away.
A teacher intervened before the argument became physical.
Clarissa’s attorney later cited that moment as proof of aggression.
Mason withdrew both children temporarily.
At home, Ben stared at the floor.
“She can make anything look bad.”
Mason sat beside him.
“She can make it look bad for a moment.”
“What if people believe her forever?”
“The people responsible for the case will examine evidence.”
“You believed her before.”
The sentence hurt.
“Sometimes.”
“Why?”
“Because she spoke calmly, and you were upset.”
Ben looked at him.
“So being upset makes the truth weaker?”
“No.”
“But adults act like it does.”
Mason had no easy answer.
He promised to change how he listened.
Not by believing every statement blindly.
By asking questions before assigning blame.
A forensic specialist recovered the deleted audio from Clarissa’s phone.
The first sound was Ava crying.
Then Clarissa’s voice:
“Say Ben did it.”
Ava answered:
“No.”
“You want him sent away, don’t you?”
“No!”
“Then tell your father you were playing.”
Ben shouted in the background:
“Leave her alone!”
Clarissa said:
“Perfect. Keep shouting.”
The file ended before Mason entered.
Clarissa had not only planned to blame Ben.
She wanted his protective anger recorded as evidence.
The haircut served two purposes.
Punish Ava for remembering Evelyn.
Frame Ben as dangerous.
At the temporary custody hearing, Clarissa’s attorney argued the audio was taken out of context.
The judge extended the order preventing her from contacting either child.
Then the family lawyer presented another discovery.
Clarissa had submitted an application to Hawthorne Ridge Academy, a residential behavioral school.
The application was for Ben.
