Chapter 17 - VANESSA LOSES THE BUSINESSVanessa’s financial conduct did not disappear because the family story was emotional.

An independent audit found $61,400 in clearly unsupported household payments to Vale House Events.
Another $22,000 was questionable but could not be definitively called improper.
Ethan resisted the urge to demand everything.
Evidence mattered.
Vanessa agreed to repay the supported amount through a civil settlement.
Her company lost two major clients when the dispute became known through required disclosures.
Eventually Vale House Events closed.
Vanessa blamed Ethan.
For months.
At one point she sent:
You ruined my life because your wife is sensitive.
Ethan did not answer.
Later she sent:
Mom needed help. I helped.
No answer.
Then:
I’m still your sister.
That one hurt.
Ethan replied:
Yes. That is why I hope you eventually understand what you did.
Vanessa asked:
Will you ever forgive me?
Ethan stared at the message.
Then wrote:
Forgiveness and access are different questions.
He had learned that from Grace.
Vanessa did not respond.
She moved to Richmond and took a salaried job with another events company.
Smaller life.
Less glamorous.
Not destroyed.
Consequences.
Margaret hated that Ethan did not financially rescue her again.
“You could fix this with one check.”
“Yes.”
“Then why won’t you?”
“Because she needs to repay what she took.”
“She’s your sister.”
“That doesn’t make Emma’s money or household money hers.”
Margaret cried.
“You’ve become hard.”
Ethan disagreed.

He had become specific.
That felt different.
