Chapter 22 - GRACE AND ETHAN FIGHTHealing did not make the marriage immediately romantic.

Six months after Ethan’s return, Grace exploded at him over a coffee cup.

He left it beside the sink.

She asked him to move it.

He said:

“In a minute.”

Grace shouted:

“Everybody in this house always expects me to wait!”

Ethan stared.

She started crying.

“This isn’t about the cup.”

“I know.”

For months, Ethan had been careful.

Helpful.

Present.

Then work demands returned.

He missed one school meeting.

Forgot a dinner plan.

Grace panicked.

Not because one missed meeting meant betrayal.

Because old patterns lived close to the surface.

They began couples therapy.

Grace said:

“I love him.”

“But I don’t trust absence anymore.”

Ethan said:

“I don’t know how to prove I won’t miss something again.”

The therapist answered:

“You cannot.”

That frustrated him.

Then:

“You create conditions where missing one thing does not silence everyone.”

Exactly.

Grace should not depend on Ethan noticing everything.

Emma should not need rescue.

Systems.

Relationships.

Other trusted adults.

Grace’s sister.

School.

Therapists.

Independent finances.

Multiple doors.

Ethan stopped trying to become omnipresent.

He became reachable.

Different.

Their marriage slowly changed from protector/protected to partners again.

One night Grace said:

“I don’t want the story to be you came home and saved us.”

Ethan nodded.

“Neither do I.”

“You interrupted something.”

“Yes.”

“Then I had to rebuild.”

“Yes.”

“And Emma spoke.”

“Yes.”

“Rosa tried.”

“Yes.”

“Claire found documents.”

“Yes.”

Grace smiled.

“Good.”

May you like

“What?”

“You’re learning.”
