Chapter 18 - DID YOU LOVE MY HUSBAND BEFORE I DISAPPEARED?

Laura requested the meeting.

Vanessa agreed.

Their attorneys resisted.

Therapists imposed conditions.

Neutral office.

No Ethan.

No Sophie.

Laura entered first.

Vanessa arrived five minutes later.

They stared.

Once roommates.

Once best friends.

Once sisters in everything but blood.

Now strangers carrying each other’s worst years.

Laura’s first question:

“Did you love Ethan before I disappeared?”

Vanessa looked at her.

“Yes.”

Laura breathed.

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

“Before Sophie?”

“No.”

“Before the accident?”

“Yes.”

“Did you ever plan to tell me?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I hated myself for it.”

Laura laughed once.

“You hated yourself and somehow I paid.”

Vanessa flinched.

Laura continued:

“Did you cause the crash?”

“No.”

“Did you tamper with my car?”

“No.”

“Tell Charles where I was driving?”

“No.”

Evidence supported Vanessa.

Laura nodded.

“I believe that.”

Vanessa looked surprised.

“I don’t need you guilty of everything.”

Silence.

Laura leaned forward.

“What did you do with the first document package?”

“I don’t know.”

“Truth.”

“I don’t.”

Laura watched her.

Vanessa continued.

“I did not take it.”

“Did Charles?”

“I suspect.”

“Proof?”

“No.”

Laura nodded.

Again.

No convenient certainty.

Then:

“Why did you create Ethan’s fake email?”

Vanessa cried.

“Because you were going back.”

“That was the point.”

“I know.”

“You told me he wanted me away.”

“Yes.”

“You let him think I was dead.”

“Yes.”

“You married him.”

“Yes.”

Laura’s hands shook.

“I want to hate you enough that none of my choices count.”

Vanessa stared.

Laura continued.

“But I stayed.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“You lied. You manipulated me. And I still stayed.”

Vanessa whispered:

“I know.”

“That does not forgive you.”

“I know.”

“It means I have to live with myself too.”

Vanessa began sobbing.

Laura did not comfort her.

Then Vanessa said something unexpected.

“I was angry at you.”

“For what?”

“For having everything and still risking it.”

Laura stared.

Vanessa continued.

“You had Ethan. Sophie. A family.”

“And Charles threatening me.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Vanessa looked down.

Laura’s voice softened.

“You thought my life was perfect because you saw it from outside.”

“Yes.”

“And I thought you were brave because you could leave anything.”

Vanessa laughed through tears.

“I couldn’t.”

There.

Two women who had envied illusions.

Laura asked:

“Did you ever think of telling Ethan yourself?”

“Every day.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because every day I had more to lose.”

Laura nodded.

“That’s how it happened to me too.”

For one second, something like their old friendship appeared.

Not reconciliation.

Recognition.

Then Laura said:

“You hurt my daughter.”

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

“Yes.”

“Whatever else happened between us, that ends everything.”

“I know.”

Laura stood.

Vanessa whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

Laura looked at her.

“I believe you.”

Vanessa’s eyes lifted.

Laura continued:

“And I still don’t forgive you.”

Then she left.

Outside, Laura sat in her car shaking.

She expected confrontation to feel victorious.

It did not.

Truth rarely delivered cinematic satisfaction.

May you like

Sometimes it simply stopped confusion from reproducing.

That was enough.
