Chapter 22 - LAURA DOES NOT GET TO BECOME MOM AGAIN IN ONE DAY

Laura wanted to move closer.

Ethan agreed, with structure.

She rented a small house fifteen minutes away.

Not Hale Residence.

Sophie helped choose a bedroom color.

Yellow.

Laura bought too many toys.

Dr. Grant told her to stop.

“You’re purchasing missed years.”

Laura laughed painfully.

“Yes.”

“Don’t.”

She returned half.

Sophie spent one afternoon there.

Then two.

No overnight initially.

First overnight came months later.

Sophie called Ethan at 9:30.

“Can I come home?”

Laura’s face fell.

Ethan said:

“Of course.”

He drove over.

Laura did not guilt Sophie.

That mattered.

She helped pack.

“Maybe next time.”

Sophie said:

“Are you sad?”

“Yes.”

“Mad?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

Laura cried after the car left.

Growth did not prevent grief.

It simply prevented grief from becoming Sophie’s job.

Over time, Laura and Ethan developed a co-parenting rhythm.

They did not resume romance.

Friends asked.

Relatives speculated.

Sophie once asked directly:

“Why can’t you marry again?”

Laura smiled.

“Because families can be families in different ways.”

“Do you like Daddy?”

“Yes.”

Ethan laughed from the kitchen.

“High praise.”

Laura rolled her eyes.

There was affection.

History.

Maybe love.

But neither used Sophie as reason to reconstruct a marriage.

That was another old mistake families made:

assuming children required adults to recreate the past.

Sophie needed honesty.

Stability.

Access to both parents.

Not a wedding.

Laura’s biggest test came when a job opportunity required three days in San Diego.

She almost declined.

Fear of leaving.

Dr. Ellis asked:

“Why?”

“I promised Sophie I wouldn’t disappear.”

“You promised to tell the truth before you leave.”

Laura stopped.

She told Sophie.

“I’m going to San Diego Tuesday. I come back Friday. Here is my hotel. Daddy knows.”

Sophie frowned.

“Can I call?”

“Anytime.”

“Will you answer?”

“If I’m in a meeting, I’ll call back.”

Sophie nodded.

Tuesday came.

Laura left.

Friday—

she returned.

Nothing dramatic.

But Sophie ran into her arms.

“You came back.”

Laura closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Small repeated experience.

That was how trust rebuilt.

May you like

Not promises.

Evidence.
