Chapter 16 - MATTEO WAS THE TARGET

Prosecutors reconstructed the Bellavere operation.

Vittorio wanted the governance vote delayed.

An outside risk committee was preparing to examine legacy Moretti transactions, including old trusts.

He feared exposure.

Conrad designed pressure.

Anthony handled logistics.

Douglas provided access.

A contractor was supposed to create a visible mechanical problem that triggered evacuation before Dante’s dinner fully began.

The plan was reckless from inception.

The contractor altered structural components more aggressively than authorized.

No one properly controlled timing.

The fixture failed with Matteo seated beneath it.

The difference between “scare Dante” and “kill Matteo” was seconds and Sofia’s reflex.

Vittorio’s email saying no injuries helped him on intent.

It devastated Dante emotionally.

“You want him to have wanted Matteo dead?” Sofia asked.

They stood on the Moretti terrace overlooking Lake Michigan.

“No.”

“You sound disappointed.”

“I hate ambiguity.”

“So do I.”

Dante looked at her.

“He loved Matteo.”

“Maybe.”

“How do you put a child at risk if you love him?”

Sofia thought about Luciana.

“Same way somebody helps his niece escape and later traps her with fear.”

Dante closed his eyes.

“Control.”

“Yes.”

People convinced they could manage consequences treated everyone else’s safety as adjustable.

Matteo’s case became a public scandal.

The press discovered Sofia’s role.

WAitress Saves Mafia Heir sounded like tabloid fiction.

Reporters camped near her apartment.

She refused interviews.

One outlet offered $50,000.

She declined.

Dante asked why.

“I’m not selling the worst ten seconds of Matteo’s life.”

He looked at her differently after that.

Vittorio’s defense team went public.

They portrayed him as an elderly businessman being scapegoated for subordinates’ unauthorized actions.

They highlighted his no-injuries email.

They questioned Anthony’s credibility.

Reasonable defense strategy.

Sofia hated it.

But she also understood legal systems required challenge.

The financial fraud case became more dangerous for Vittorio than the sabotage.

Repeated false certifications.

Knowledge of Sofia’s existence.

Personal enrichment.

Those records did not depend on frightened cooperators.

Paper survived.

Monica built the ownership claim.

Dante made a difficult decision.

He voluntarily placed disputed shares he controlled into escrow pending resolution.

His accountants objected.

Several executives called it unnecessary.

Dante insisted.

Sofia confronted him.

“You didn’t knowingly steal them.”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because if some of what I own came from Luciana’s false death, I don’t want to profit while lawyers argue.”

“You don’t have to perform guilt for me.”

“I’m not.”

She studied him.

He meant it.

Moretti Hospitality’s board also voted to suspend Vittorio’s honorary chairmanship.

Not because Dante ordered it.

Independent directors reviewed evidence.

Vittorio lost.

For the first time in decades, his name no longer guaranteed deference.

He called Dante after the vote.

“You humiliated me.”

“You did that yourself.”

“I built that company.”

“Luciana helped own it.”

“She left.”

“You told everyone she died.”

“She chose the lie too.”

That was true.

Dante paused.

Vittorio heard it.

“You see?”

Dante answered:

“She chose a false death to escape. You chose to profit from it for twenty-eight years.”

Silence.

Different choices.

Different culpability.

Vittorio said:

“The girl will destroy you.”

“Sofia?”

“Yes.”

“She’ll take the company apart.”

“If truth takes it apart, it deserved to come apart.”

Vittorio laughed.

“You sound like Luciana.”

“Good.”

He hung up.

Sofia later heard about the call.

“Stop telling people I’ll destroy your company.”

“I didn’t.”

“Your uncle does.”

“He’s losing imagination.”

Matteo began therapy after nightmares about ceilings.

Dante initially resisted.

Not because he rejected therapy.

Because he feared labeling the child.

Sofia pushed.

“You have therapists.”

“That’s different.”

“How?”

Dante had no answer.

Matteo saw a child psychologist.

He drew pictures of falling lights.

Then drawings of Sofia as a superhero.

She objected.

“I don’t have a cape.”

Matteo added one.

Problem solved.

The therapist told Dante not to let rescue mythology burden Matteo or Sofia.

Sofia appreciated that.

She did not want her identity frozen around saving him.

She wanted to become something else too.

Renee asked what work she wanted next.

Sofia surprised herself.

“Hospitality management.”

“You still want restaurants?”

“I hate what Bellavere did.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

“I liked the work.”

Serving was not shameful.

Being invisible was.

She enrolled in a part-time hospitality management certificate program using a scholarship unrelated to Dante.

He offered tuition.

She refused.

He did not ask twice.

Progress.

Then Monica found a structural detail that changed the ownership case.

Luciana’s shares had not simply transferred on death.

A trust provision stated that if she had surviving issue, her beneficial interest continued through them.

Meaning Vittorio’s certifications were not administrative technicalities.

He had affirmatively concealed Sofia to terminate her branch’s rights.

The money did not become hers because she appeared now.

Legally, significant portions may have belonged to her all along.

Sofia stared.

“So when I was working doubles…”

Monica nodded.

“Potentially.”

“When Mom was paying rent late…”

“Yes.”

“When she couldn’t afford one medication until the next month…”

Monica’s face tightened.

“Yes.”

Sofia left the room.

This time anger was not abstract.

Vittorio had known Luciana had a daughter.

He had watched the wealth grow.

He let Luciana stay afraid and poor while certifying no heir existed.

Whether he caused Peter’s death might never be proven.

But this—

this was documented.

For the first time, Sofia wanted the money.

Not to spend.

May you like

To take it away from the man who had built comfort on her mother’s fear.
