Chapter 17 - THE DNA RESULT

The DNA result had already established blood.

What chapter seventeen established was belonging.

Those were different.

Sofia received an invitation to the annual Moretti Foundation dinner.

She almost threw it away.

Dante had not sent it.

The board had.

Some members wanted to “welcome Luciana’s daughter.”

Others probably wanted to examine the new claimant.

Sofia disliked both motives.

She went anyway.

Not in a borrowed designer gown.

She purchased a simple dark green dress herself.

Mia helped with hair.

The pendant remained visible.

“Weaponized necklace,” Mia said.

“Sentimental jewelry.”

“Sure.”

At the hotel ballroom, conversations stopped.

Sofia recognized the sensation from Bellavere.

Only reversed.

For years she had been invisible among wealthy people.

Now everyone looked.

She preferred invisibility.

Dante approached.

Black tuxedo.

Controlled menace reduced slightly by Matteo holding his hand.

Matteo wore navy again.

He saw Sofia and ran.

“Cousin!”

Half the ballroom heard.

Good.

No complicated introduction required.

Dante looked at the pendant.

“You wore it.”

“It belongs to me.”

“Yes.”

No argument.

Several older Moretti relatives approached.

Aunt Francesca cried.

A cousin named Julian looked suspicious.

An elderly man kissed Sofia’s hand until she pulled it away.

Family was overwhelming.

Some genuinely remembered Luciana.

Others remembered only scandal.

Sofia listened.

Luciana once drove her father’s Cadillac without permission.

Luciana punched a cousin for teasing Dante.

Luciana loved pistachio gelato.

Sofia collected tiny pieces of her mother no safe-deposit box could preserve.

That was the first time the Moretti name gave instead of took.

Then Vittorio entered.

He was out pending proceedings and subject to restrictions.

Legally permitted at the foundation dinner because no order prohibited it.

Dante’s face hardened.

Sofia touched his arm.

“Don’t.”

He looked at her.

“This is my conversation.”

Vittorio approached.

The room quieted.

“Sofia.”

She met his eyes.

He looked older than in photographs.

But still formidable.

“You have Luciana’s face.”

“So people keep telling me.”

“I loved your mother.”

Sofia did not flinch.

“I believe you.”

That surprised him.

She continued.

“I also believe you lied about her for twenty-eight years.”

His expression tightened.

“This isn’t the place.”

“You walked over.”

Dante almost smiled.

Vittorio lowered his voice.

“Your mother made choices too.”

“I know.”

“She agreed to disappear.”

“I know.”

“She took money.”

“I know.”

“She threatened the family.”

“I know.”

Each answer removed a weapon.

Sofia did not need Luciana to be perfect.

Vittorio’s face changed.

He had expected denial.

Sofia continued.

“She was afraid. Sometimes unfair. She lied to me. She stayed away too long.”

Vittorio stared.

“And you still think I’m the villain?”

“I think you are responsible for what you did.”

Simple.

Specific.

Harder to escape.

He looked at the pendant.

“That was my mother’s before Luciana.”

“I know.”

“It belongs with the family.”

Sofia smiled faintly.

“It is with the family.”

Vittorio’s jaw tightened.

Sofia continued:

“Just not under your control.”

That line moved through the room without anyone repeating it.

Vittorio walked away.

No dramatic explosion.

He had lost something worse.

Authority.

Relatives who once would have followed him now avoided his gaze.

The foundation dinner continued.

Sofia gave no speech.

She danced with Matteo once because he insisted.

Dante did not dance.

“Assassin posture problem?” she asked.

“I don’t dance.”

“Coward.”

He raised an eyebrow.

Later they stood near the balcony.

Dante said:

“The DNA changed everything legally.”

Sofia nodded.

“But tonight changed something else.”

“What?”

“You’re here because you chose to be.”

She looked at him.

“Yes.”

“You could still leave.”

“I know.”

“And keep the Vale name.”

“I plan to.”

Dante nodded.

No disappointment visible.

That made her emotional.

“My mother wrote that you’d be angry.”

“I was.”

“She said you deserved the truth.”

“I did.”

“She also said she didn’t know how to come back after twenty years.”

Dante looked at the city.

“I don’t know if I would’ve forgiven her immediately.”

“You don’t have to pretend.”

“I wish she gave me the chance.”

Sofia touched his sleeve.

“She loved you.”

“I know now.”

That was something.

Across the ballroom, Gabriel approached with Monica.

Both looked serious.

Sofia groaned.

“Lawyers walking together should be illegal.”

Monica ignored her.

“We found the trust distributions.”

“How bad?”

“For Vittorio?”

“Yes.”

“Very.”

Over twenty-seven years, trusts controlled by Vittorio received more than $14 million directly traceable to Luciana’s extinguished interest.

Investment gains multiplied that.

Current disputed value could exceed $32 million.

Sofia stared.

Dante asked:

“Can we recover?”

“Some. Not all. But enough.”

Gabriel added:

“There’s more.”

“Of course.”

“In 2004, after Peter died, Vittorio purchased a life-insurance policy.”

Sofia frowned.

“On who?”

“Not Peter.”

Gabriel looked at Dante.

“On Luciana.”

The room seemed to shrink.

“How?”

Sofia whispered.

“She was legally dead.”

“Exactly,” Gabriel said.

The application used Elena Vale’s identity but listed a business relationship through a shell entity.

Beneficiary:

A Vittorio-controlled trust.

Sofia’s stomach turned.

“Did he collect when Mom died?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Three million.”

Silence.

Even Dante looked stunned.

Vittorio had profited from Luciana twice.

Once when she falsely died.

Again when she actually did.

That was greed so layered it almost looked like obsession.

And this time, the evidence was recent.

Three years old.

Documented.

May you like

Very much prosecutable.
